This is the official AAR for the one-player, one-ruler game that can be found here. Anyone may play, regardless of skill level, provided you post an AAR of your ruler's reign on this thread. We're hoping to take this as far as it goes (ideally to 1953, provided certain issues with this design concept can be made to work with Ricky and HOI2) and everyone is free to join. Simply post on the aforementioned forum your desire to play and the proper saved game will be given to you when your turn comes up. The idea is been brought up of giving descriptive surnames to rulers, aka Frederick the Great. After each person posts their ruler's AAR, other players are encouraged to read through it and come up with a proper surname based on the AAR. We will then vote on a the most popular surname and the player's character will thus be known henceforth. Questions? Comments? Feel free to post them on either related thread or send me a PM. I'll answer them as quickly as possible. Enjoy!

The Reign of Erik Anundsson av Munso, 1066-1090 AD

Erik Anundsson av Munso, known to history as Erik the Ill-fated
b. 1049 AD
d. 1090 AD

Duke of Uppland. Count of Uppland and Sodermanland. Heir to King of Sweden.

Duke Erik Anundsson av Munso didn't have the look of royalty, nor the personality generally associated with royalty. Indeed, he was considered to be both lazy and rebellious. In fact, the only claim he had to royalty was his marriage to the King of Denmark's daughter. His strengths, if they could be called such, were in the manipulation of both his couriers and his money. Unofficially the Duke had a hearty appetite for young wenches, bearing 10 children by the age of 37, two of whom were bastards. And while he may not have been ordained with the congenial traits of a good ruler, he did have the good sense to surround himself with the brightest couriers to be found in Europe.

Despite his lack of royal attributes, the Duke believed early on that he was the proper heir to the throne of Sweden and displayed a consequent flair for independance. Soon after his 18th birthday he mobilized his armies and declared war on the nearby isle of Alano of his own accord. The isle's pagan occupants were quickly routed and the stronghold besieged. The King of Sweden, however, was not about to be outdone by a mere duke and promptly declared war on the stronghold, as did his ally the King of Denmark. The result was that possession of the isle was given to Denmark after the fall of the stronghold. Angry at what he viewed to be outright theft, av Munso concentrated on improving the infrastructure of his duchy rather than meddle in kingdom affairs any further. The result was that the region had changed little a decade into his rule, other than the conquest of Alano.

Another decade passed during which the only news of note were the premature deaths of two of av Munso's wives, his subsequent remarriages to the 16 yr old daughters of Irish dukes, and the further propogation of his brood. The Pope also called for the liberation of Antioch from the Muslim infidels but av Munso, who took no interest in affairs outside of his realm, hardly noticed.

screensave0ka3.png

Indeed, av Munso's disdain for his liege the king reached new heights in 1086 when war was declared on the King of Norway. The King of Sweden requested that av Munso mobilize his troops on no fewer than 3 times but met steadfast refusal. In the resulting war with Norway the King of Sweden was roundly defeated, likely as a result of av Munso's refusal to provide his king with some of the kingdom's finest troops. The King was forced to cede the counties of Varmland and Vastergotland to the King of Norway.

screensave1gi6.png

As later events soon confirmed, av Munso had played his cards well. His consistant displays of rebellion had given him great prestige and his focus on building his realm's infrastructure a fair amount of loyalty. When the King of Sweden died from the severe wounds he had incurred on the battlefield against Norway, av Munso was quickly elected as his heir. The Duke, now King, was quick to spread his inheritance amongst his vast number of children, thus solidifying his realm in the hands of his loyal family. Additionally, one of his first actions of note was to change the inheritance law from Elective to Semisalic Consanguinity. He had no intention of allowing the same law that brought him to power to bring about the downfall of his family's dynasty.

screensave3hx9.png

King Erik I, as he was now known, was not given much of a chance to enjoy his reign as Sweden's monarch. Wounds he had suffered on the battlefield in his aborted conquest of Alano developed into a serious illness which eventually took his life in October of 1090. His firstborn son, Elof, beat out his 10 surviving siblings for their father's crown. Thus ended the reign of Erik Anundsson av Munso, King of Sweden and founder of the av Munso dynasty.

King Elof the Vengefull

Elof av Munsö birth 1069, death 1136.

King of Sweden and some other titles he didn't care much about.

Elof was a really ambitious King. He was no man to wait and see, but rather to fight whenever he had to. Which meant he fought every war he saw a small chance of success. So the first thing he did when getting King was very easy to describe. He told his vassals to send their men to Uppland and attacked the heathens in Finland. His plan was simple but perfect. He was raised to be a warrior, and both time and opportunity should make him one of the greatest warrior Kings of all time.

1zs6.jpg

Though only said to be a tough soldier, Elof knew he was more than that.

2me9.jpg

The Swedish plan. Actually it was thrown away a month after landing in Nyland as Viborg had taken Finland by then. So the army went via Finland towards Tavasts instead. What they then didn't know was that the one blue land up north in Finland was catholic, so the King had to wait until he was Duke of Karelia to get it as vassal.

What however was true was that the King was back to christmas. Yes, it was christmas '93 and not '90, but hey, who cares. It was good he came, though, as the King of Norway had attacked his Kingdom.

3mc5.jpg

They outnumber us 3 to 2? We can't possibly lose!

He thought he would only be at war with Norway, but the King was mistaken. The Tribe of Tavasts still existed, though not in Finland but in Iceland.

4tn9.jpg

As he saw no sense in getting there Elof made peace with them.

In the war the heir to Sweden, Aselin was born. Good to know he had a son if he died, even if he had enough brothers so the Kingdom wouldn't be lost. However, although he fought a lot of battles he never was wounded, not to talk about death.

5nf1.jpg

Young Aselin, firstborn to Sweden.

The war went not really well for a long time, but after some time Elof had managed to get the reputation of being immortal, as he survived every battle he lost (and he lost every battle he had no superior numbers). Even if only twenty of two thousand of his men survived, he was one of those. So in the end the war was one and not only Val taken back, but also Värmland and Jämtland won.

6jo0.jpg

One could argue however, that the Swedes only managed to win the war because the Danes attacked Norway and killed of the whole army. But we'll stick with our story of a glorious Swedish King instead.

What one can see on this map as well is, that the Danes had stolen Swedish lands. This happened when Uppland was occupied by Norwegians and the whole southern Swedish army was fighting in Norway itself. So Elof didn't aid his vassal and let him die. The Danes had four times the Swedish manpower at this time, together with the fact the whole army was still fighting against Norwegians meant there was no possible way to save a vassal. But Elof would soon enough take revenge for this.

Only two months after the King again declared war on Norway. While he had some time to get new men, his enemies had fought Denmark the last months. Elof rather chose to use every opportunity to win territory than to improve his infrastructure. Should his sons do that, he would fight for Sweden.

7hc3.jpg

As you can see here this war went much better than the first. Trondelag could easily be taken by Swedes and got annexed. Now, after ten years of constant war, three with heathens and seven with Norway, you say he should have some time for peace? Elof had other plans.

With his new won prestige in this war he claimed the southern Swedish lands to be his and attacked Denmark. He wasn't even really out of his castle when he produced his first bastardson with some minor noble. It shouldn't be the last.

8ih5.jpg

Five minutes are such a long time, he already felt alone. Of course he couldn't let stress hamper his progress, so he did what every responsible ruler would do.

Despite the fact they still outnumbered him two to one he could not only take Östergotland and Västergotland back, but also win Halland. His tactics in this war where very simple, he had taken most lands before the Danes could react, and when they did he used one part of his army to stop their advance while the other could take Halland.

9ke4.jpg

Take that stupid Danes! You steal my land? Well, I'll take it back. And I get Halland as compensation.

10hp9.jpg

What campain you ask? Well, we went for Mecklenburg. Peace, what is that?

11ty6.jpg

After creating a bunch of Bishoprics in Finland, Elof controlled the Pope. You know what that means, don't you?

If your guess was, excommunicate the King of Denmark and annex them, you were right. I don't know what I really should tell about it. I have no picture of it, but it was just a bit running over the Danes and then claiming their lands. As they first oned Archa (near Tripoli) and this was surrounded by heathens, I couldn't go there. But as soon as the Muslims had taken that back I could claim the land and then annex them.

Needless to say the King was too stupid to keep the lands around Mecklemburg and they joined France/Germany.

To complete his unification of Scandinavia, Elof chose the peaceful way, which meant he married his son Aselin to the eldest daughter of Norway.

12qa8.jpg

All is said with this picture I suppose.

13qc8.jpg

Ok, those Norwegians were some bastards and changed the succession law to salic consanguinity. So much to the peaceful way.

14jl5.jpg

Yeah sure, and then we'll institute democracy and get a social democrat government. In one word, no.

Being Papal Controller was a good thing and so the King excommunicated and annexed Brandenburg, which had been independent. They never stood a chance and so got part of the Scandinavian Empire.

Next on the hitlist was Pommerania, which again was annexed before it even managed to get their men together to fight. Some bastardsons of the King (I think he had five or so, but it could be one more or less, never really payed attention to this).

15de8.jpg

Now it would be easy to take Norway, wouldn't the Fatimids have takens some our vassals lands. Of course the King chose to take the land back and attacked the Fatimids. Although they soon were thrown out of the Kings lands they refused to make peace. Thus the King and some other men from Brandenburg and Denmark went down south.

16al0.jpg

While Elof was in Anatolia suddenly his wife died. Yeah, the official one of the twenty or so. As he was running low on money he got one as fast as he could and took the money to pay his men.

17rt7.jpg

The new Queen. Basically she just was the first young girl the King could find.

Ok, so the Duke of Brandenburg didn't like the fact the King was using his men to die somewhere in the desert and declared war. The fact that Elof had realm duress didn't make this any better.

Somehow I managed only to take pictures of the unimportant facts while I forgot the important things, but I think I can tell it. What basically happened was that the Duke of Gotland was pissed of by my rule and declared himself independent, giving me realm duress. Now a lot of others joined, so said the Dukes of Smaland, Skane and Norrland. Then the Duke of Brandenburg joined the game and pledged allegiance to France. Needless to say they thought it was best to fight for their vassal even if he already was at peace and refused to make peace the next ten years.

Now, at war with the Fatimids, France, and half of my vassals, it seemed I was doomed. However, the French fought some other countries as well and the Fatimids accepted a white peace after fifteen years. So the King just made peace with his vassals and hoped them to join his realm again as he was their natural overlord. The only vassal to die was the Duke of Karelia, as there was no Finland title. Elof tried and tried, but the Pope didn't agree to give him a King title for this.

Within this civil war Elof's own bastard son in Danzig attacked him. Bastard. Then he pledged allegiance to Poland. As revenge Elof excommunicated the King of Poland, but made peace-

18xj3.jpg

Norway forgot that attacking someone having ten times as much men with a claim on their land when being at war with a vassal is not a smart move. Yes, Elof was caught in a civil war, but he still was able to annex Norway.

19pg8.jpg

Ok, true, the King's bastardson isn't better than you in martial score and you are heir to the throne. But, well, ok, no but there, you'll get Marshall now.

And again I have managed not to take any screenshots. But let's say it this way, Sjaelland joined the realm when being attacked by Derbent, which lead to a war against the Muslims in Hungary for the next twenty years. That war sucked. Elof sent men, lost the battle and sent new. That worked quite some time although it annoyed the King quite badly. Again Elof managed not to die even if he was outnumbered ten to one or worse. And that with his sixty years.

He managed to make peace with both Derbent and the Qarakhnids (or however their name is). This was the first year of peace since he attacked the Fatimids in 1105. So in thirty years Sweden had not seen peace. And in his whole reign there was only peace for some months, not even a year.

20kk6.jpg

And so, in 1135, with 66 years, Elof av Munsö, died of his age. He had survived thousands of battles, but won only one fifth of them. His grandson succeeded him as his son had died in a battle sometime in the past. What could he complain though, he wanted to be Marshall, and he knew the consequences.

Elof left his successors land in Scandinavia.

That's it, I didn't reload but one time, as I had to sleep too, and actually wanted Elof to die much sooner. Well then, it was fun and count me in whenever the next game starts.

Just read through your part Manstein16, well done. And made it easy for me. So, who wants to be next should PM me his E-mail and I'll send him the save.

Oh, and Elof has beaten his father to it, fourteen kids we know of! Not to count those we do not.

It was the year of 1136, and Markus av Munso, the swedish prince, was crowned king of all the Swedes. So started his short rule over the United Scandinavian kingdom formed by his glorious ancestors.

Impressed with all the luxurious environment of the court, Markus immediately realised he had no sons, or wife. He then looked for a wife to marry, and soon found one, a hungarian courtier, daughter of noblemen who came from these distant lands now partly under swedish rule. Her name was Agata Arpad, and she was young and beatiful.

screensave45av9.png

The hungarian family, impressed with the honor of having her daughter married with the highest authority in the realm, soon offered a large part of their money as duty, hoping that this would bring them closer to the king. This partially worked, as the king really was looking for money to satisfy his ambitions. After granting the hungarians commercial privileges in the prosperous Hanseatic trade, he then turned to his own plans.

screensave46do8.png

First, he married several members of his family that were previously unmarried, in an effort to (partially) curb promiscuity in his court. Whether this worked or not, the king wasn't really worried. He then spent his time writing a new code of laws to Sweden, that would radically change everything since Sweden hertself converted to christianity and became a civilized kingdom. Instead of relying on the customs of his ancestors, and mixing old pagan customs with christian laws, he elaborated new laws ruling the Church and the State. He discarded the old viking laws on vassalship and put in place a new law, based on the feudal contract that was used in Southern and Central Europe. The people protested violently. Even armed revolts broke out, but the noblemen and vassals of His Majesty were pleased with the new laws, which gave them more power to rule their own lands in exchange for more loyalty and a bigger compromise with the kingdom. This subsequently increased their loyalty to Markus av Munso.

With the church, King Markus was more firm. He imposed a new law confirming his absolute authority on religious affairs on all the realm. This, he thought, would give him authority to impose more moderate usury laws on the Swedish kingdom allowing traders, bankers and merchants to expand their businesses. He also hoped to attract merchant families and princes that would invest in trade and improve the economy, thus giving him more money for his ambitious campaigns.

screensave48rz0.gif

(This honourable courtier was beatified after his death, thus giving more honor to the Swedish court. Markus paid homage to him)

Meanwhile, Markus finally anounced to the Nobles his plans primary plans about Sweden. It seemed that there were still pagans in these lands, and he would do his best to prevent them from harming christians. "This", said Markus to his court, "can only be done by taking their lands and converting them, by force". Clearly no plan was better than that. Being pagans, it would be easy to conquer them without suffering too much in the eyes of the Christian world, and without having to waste his time and prestige in diplomatic contests and by grabbing claims. So, in July 1136, he announced that the Kingdom of Sweden was now at war with the Tribe of Viken, which dared to occupy christian lands in Sweden. The battle was short, brutal and bloody, but the king was brave still. He then charged with his knights right behind the enemy lines, causing panic and shock. But then, as he thought victory was achieved, suddenly a great number of berserkers charged from the woods right into his position.

These berserkers were the descendants of the old viking berserkers who terrified the lands of Europe for a long time before Sweden converted to Christianity. While most of the berserkers disapeared with time, some remained and refused to adopt Christianity. They still fought in the ways of their ancestors, and were terryfing just to look at.

Now, the king was trapped. Most of his knights ran, scared away. Only he and a few, brave and loyal nobles remained. They fought until everyone of them, except for the king himself, was dead. The king was surrounded, trapped. If only his army could rescue him from danger...

-----------------

The king woke up, lying on his bed at the palace in Stockholm. His first question was to know why he was feeling such a pain, and he asked for the royal physician. The Queen, looking very concerned, said the physician himself was exhausted due to his efforts to save the life of the king, who was found covered by blood on the night after the battle. First he was thought dead, but then, after a soldier alledgely heard his heart still beating, he was rushed to Stockholm where the royal physicians took care of him day and night. He survived, although at a very high cost. The king was now severely wounded, and could not lead any armies nor even leave his bed. He was stuck with pain, incapable to do anything.

screensave50po4.png

After this grave incident, it seemed the days looked like hell as he could not leave his bed and had to give orders from there. Day and night, he was stuck and depressed. But still firm, he gave orders all the day to his servants, demanded that even the most distant nobles could visit him at least once every year and continued to write his code of laws. The queen, whom he loved, was continuously on his side. Soon it was announced she was pregnant.

screensave51as6.png

A child! This would be a gift from the heavens after the king was now wounded, and his wounds could get worse and even kill him. He needed a successor now, and his dear wife would provide him with one and save the kingdom from disaster.

On March 26, 1137, the Duke of Smaland, after previously refusing to become a vassal of king Markus and become a part of the swedish kingdom once again, finally changed his mind and sent a request to the king, asking for a vassalization under the new laws of the realm . The king, on his bed, immediately accepted and sent a message congratulating the Duke of Smaland for his loyalty.

Finally, on May 27 of that same year, his beloved Agata gave birth to a child. The king was anxious to know about his future and supposed heir, but then, he didn't like the news he received.

screensave52wg7.png

His little daughter, whose name only his wife could pronounce, was a beatiful girl. However, she could never inherit the glorious Kingdom of Sweden from her father.

----

Once again, encouraged by the better laws written by Markus av Munso, old vassals of Sweden who had declared their independence asked to rejoin the kingdom again. The king gladly accepted, and soon Norrland rejoined Sweden.

The sweet Agata, whom he loved, spent all days and nights with him. Soon she was pregnant again, for the joy of Markus and his court.

------

Meanwhile, while ill and sad, the king received an emissary from the pope. After a brief conversation and salutations, the emissary showed his message, written by the hands of the Pope himself.

Meanwhile, after pondering what to do and how to leave this delicate position, while suddenly feeling a stroke of pain, the king was short, undelicate and blunt.

screensave54mp1.png

----

The commercial activities promoted by the king soon generated results. Moneylenders started a business in Vastergoland, but the clergy saw this as an insult to their faith and principles.

Agata left the palace in a diplomatic mission, and soon the king of Sweden felt alone again. While he was lying on his bed, feeling a massive stroke of pain, a young lady entered the room. She was not of noble origin, but she was beatiful, and she catched the attention of the king. The two were together in an instant, afterall, what are moral principles when you seriously need to satisfy your impulses?

screensave55kh0.png

The result of this brief relationship was a bastard son. Neither him could succeed to the throne unless the king made giant efforts. But then, all the hope of giving him the kingdom of Sweden was frustrated when he died, mistreated because of his inferior position. Once again, the king didn't have a son to succeed him.

----

After giving orders to expand the loan market in all Sweden, the king distributed land in Hungary to bishops and counts in order to get more piety. He created several new titles and administrative divisions, including the Duchy of Pressburg, which was given to a loyal courtier in order to boost the prestige of the king. He adopted a handsoff position towards his hungarian possessions, concentrated only in ruling Scandinavia directly and giving potentially rebellious, poor and distant areas to idle courtiers.

The visit of the pope's emissary, and its failure, were not forgiven by the Catholic Church. Soon the pope sent another emissary, this time with a less polite letter.

screensave63nu6.png

He was furious with the skeptical position of Markus since the last emissary was sent, and demanded him an excuse to the Church, as well as a formidable amount of money to be paid in indulgences and more power to the clergy everywhere in the kingdom. The king complied with all but the last, and feeling personally insulted by the pope, he made an unique decision. For now, he would openly adopt a new branch of Christianity, thus leaving the Catholic Church. Now, Markus av Munso was officialy a heretic king.

----

screensave56ca1.png

The reaction of the feudal nobility and the people was unexpected. Nobody complied, and except with a few, indignated priests, life soon continued. Markus av Munso seriously hoped the pope was distracted enough to not take this seriously, but then Agata returned. He forgot about the young lady in his room and admired his wife again. Their future son was about to born, with the hope of peace and prosperity as the king had now an heir.

But then, it was another girl, not the boy he was expecting for.

----

Despite knowing the king of Sweden was heretic, all the other independent dukes in Sweden agreed to return to the kingdom. With the exception of Skane, which was conquered in a campaign ordered by the king and given to an Arab bishop who was in the court. The arabs were not rare in the court of the king, and many of them were still muslims. The king even agreed to marry an arab lady in his court to a petty sheik in the Middle East, and her marriage was celebrated by all the two parties without any sign of religious hatred or dispute.

-------

screensave64gc2.png

Apart from that, and a debt acquired while fighting wars and rebels, life was normal. But the king was getting worse and worse, and now he was unable to manage the kingdom. As a result, he had to cede many of his less important posessions to gradually more disloyal vassals, aware that their king was a heretic. Meanwhile Markus was more and more zealous about his faith, and even spent money building a church for it. He would beg God for days and days to forgive his sins and allow him to live one more day. Debt was high, but then the own king decided not to charge scutage to keep his vassals loyal. Already there were ones thinking about war and independence. Finland seceeded, but was quickly vassalized again.

Many courties were leaving the court, refusing to accept the religious position of the king. Between them there were several close relatives of Markus, who was sad to lose even their support now. And meanwhile there were no signs that his beloved Agata would give him an heir to the throne.

The last hope came when he was admitted to the church again, by promising the pope to give support in his Crusade to take the Holy Land. After a brief cerimony, Markus av Munso was a catholic again. The king, strong in his beliefs of honour, fascinated the vassals who joined his cause again. Sweden was united, and under a Catholic king.

But soon Markus' condition got worse. He was very ill, feeling great and repetitive strokes of pain. In November 28, 1141, he finally passed away without an heir. The lands were given to the Duke of Trondelag, who was awarded with this title by the king soon before his death in the hope he could better manage these lands. And so, after only five years of rule, king Markus av Munso of the Swedes was now dead.

screensave75rj7.png

Markus av Munso will be forever known as Markus, the Dreamer.

Please tell me that the dynasty survived...

Very nice post. I'm glad to see that CSK's vast conquests didn't quickly disintegrate. Good work!

With this amount of male relatives I don't think it's that easy to die out for the royal family.

The King can't leave his bed and soon his wife is pregnant. What strange coincidence.

Oh, and it seems Markus came a lot like his grandfather, getting a bastard as soon as the Queen is out of sight. :D

Of course, I completely forgot about the fact that the males in this dynasty seem to do nothing but propagate their brood. The successor line must be huge.

Has the next reign begun yet? I'm liking the way this is going.

King Avnfast The Omnipotent

Avnfast av Munsö
Birth: 1118
Death: 1158
Rule: 1141-1158

King of Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

When Avnfast first looked upon his new kingdom, it was in tatters, the average loyalty of his vassals was below 50% and could provoke a civil war any given second. To add to that he was in debt and the economic and infastructure of the realm was non existant, then there was his piety which was in the red, which made the pope see red.

But that was only the start of his trouble as 3 of his demense was revolting and 1 had typhoid, and he was over the maximum amount of demense he could handle to administrate, he also barely had a respectable reputation bordering tarnished.

First action called for immediate loyalty and economic improvement of the realm, while looking over his finances he noticed that church donations was maxed out, though this could have been useful for his less than good piety the large drain on his income it did was not worth it, and he set it back to normal since all the clergy in his provinces was almost fully loyal anyway.

Secondly he found his steward to inefficient to deal with the states economic matters and appointed Kuno Von Oldenburg(14) new steward.

To deal with his vassals horrible loyalty, his failing reputation and his inability to handle so many demesne, Avnfast first set up to resolve all at once by granting the porest of the northern provinces to loyal subjects.
And thus it came to pass that Medelpad(base income 0.45), Hålogaland(0.60) and Hdemark(0.60) was granted away. After this despite having debt he saw the need to use 400 gold to bribe better loyalty of the stronger more important vassals, and keeping scutage to 0 until the situation improved.

After changing his research focus from slashing weapons to seige equipment because he trusted his tactics to win the battles he began quest for personal.

Later same year (1141) the king og Bohemia expressed his desire to form an alliance which Avnfast accepted, both in order to protect his hungarian possesions better but also to kept his hungarian subjects in line.

As money began to clear his debt he immediately saw the need for a major power distribution reform in order to effectively support his economy.
Now were there use to be vast clergic power, peasants and burghers now regined, only the rebelling provinces were left alone as to not further upset the delicate situation.

By the end of the reform the power were roughly distributred to all provinces as following:

Peasants: 30%
Burghers: 40%
Clergy: 10%
Nobles: 20%

In January and February of 1142, 2 of the revolts came to a halt as Avnfast folded to thier demands to insure peace and stability in his realm leaving only the rebels in the capital.

In April as the situation seemed to begin to come under control, vassals was getting loyal, the economy was improving, revolts was stopping, Avnfast thought it was about time to call in the general estates which gave a significant boost to the royal coffers.

As he could now take less focus on the economics and look more to his family he noticed what a complete imbecil his wife was, she couldn't even put 2 and 2 together. Fortunately there was an upside to this wíth his future plans. She would never see it coming...

With her low intrigue rating against his and his excellent spymaster, she never stood a chance, the killer came silently in the night, and left the same.
The next morning the king publicly morned the loss of his wife and immediatly started looking for another.

He found what he was looking for in the county of Gizeh (just looked normally, no bridefinder or anything.) A beautiful arab catholic, Amina Grenier.
And he got a good marriage duty, more than enough to pay up for his own wifes unfortunate demise.

After holding a lovely wedding and a good nights 'sleep' with his wife. He again focused on the development of his kingdom. The nobles in his provinces were disgruntled as they had been robbed of land, so he reduced the crown duty to 0 to get thier loyalty back up. Meanwhile a massive library and road construction were begun across the kingdom.

Later the Duke of Norrland even was so pleased with Avnfast ruling that his loyalty increase 0.25 and he spread the word that Avnfast was a Just ruler which he then got as a trait.

To continue the eventful month, the rebels in the capital refused to bend and broke out in open skirmishes with royal forces.

In october the peasants broke out in open rebellion again, and tried to overthrown Avnfast but they were harshly put down.
To round the year off though he managed to get rid of the Typhoid in his provinces.

As Avnfast looked on his improving realm he could however not shake the feeling of evil papal eyes looking over his shoulder. So he decided to make his piety seem a little better. In Sep 43 he gathered an royal army on 5000 men and decleared war on the pagan tribe of Ösel (island outside baltic).

The war drained the last money in the coffers, but then Avnfast saw an opertunity as local money lenders were attracted in his capital, he could borrow from them, but he had to cross his fingers and hope the pope wouldnt notice. This greatly helped the economy further and as homage he started building 3 new churches.

as Ösel was conquered the clergy was given 100% power and it was turned into a bishopric which finally gave Avnfast enough piety to get on the positive scale.

After Ösel was taken and with the coffers full again it was time to take Vastmanland back into the fold as Avnfast was its rightful owner.
Unfortunately it had allied with the Kingdom of Scotland which decleared war on Avnfast, then then the King of Bohemia came to his rescue and decleared war on scotland.
After the capture of Vastmanland Avnfast again felt like he had to many demense to control so he made his poorest province convert to a bishopric which was Naumadal.
Meanwhile the scottish king had realised his foolishness and offered 128 gold pieces in return for peace which Avnfast accepted.

January stroke the year 1146 in as Avnfast was looking over his schematics and letters, he saw that all his vassals was now unquestionable loyal and he felt it was time to change the succession laws. From now on competence should be the governing trait, not age, and thus the succession laws were changed to Semisalic Consanguinity.

Finally in Sep 45 the rebels agreed to negotiate peace, and the realm was for the first time in many years at complete peace.
To Avnfast misfortune though it appears the rebel communication isnt very good as soon after another open revolt occurs.

In Sep 46 another royal army on 6000 men was gathered for an eastern campaign, this time it was the Tribe of Sames that was up for grabs.
In May 47 peace was concluded as the last of the province of the tribe fell,
the new provinces however were very poor and pagan, so the clergy power was put in the high seat and they were all to be turned into bishoprics to boost Avnfast small piety.
However only 1 bishop was available so 2 of the provinces for now had to be under Avnfasts rule, while it was, religious tensions were rising and broke out in holy war which Avnfast prudently crushed, instantly converting North Dvina to catholism.

In July 48 Avnfast decleared himself Duke of Bjarmia and Duke of Pest since there was no other duke, of fear of a decentralized kingdom he kept the titles for himself though, wanting to only have count vassals. And later same year the pope called to arms to liberate Roma which he turned the blind eye to.

In Nov 49 the loyalty of the nobles were finally at 100% after the drastic power distribution reforms in 41 and thus crown duty were reinstated at normal rate.

In April 50 Avnfast finally got 2 men with clerical education able to perform their duties at their new bishoprics in northern Russia, leaving avnfast with a decent amount of piety.

In Nov 50 a political game began as all vassals were now 100% loyal, Avnfast began a political war with his strongest duke, the Duke of Östergotland that held 9 counts as vassals, in the end Avnfast succeeded in revoking his dukedom.
However the duke unfortunately owned 2 other duke titles so the counts remained under his control but the first step was taken.

Later same month scutage was introduced at normal levels again.
This brought the economy up to a all time high income of 73.82 gold a month.
From the start income at his reign at 19.03

In March 51 it was again time to crave large general estates, which Avnfast did but unluckily he got both the reckless and the arbitrary trait from it.

In Dec 51 second phase of Avnfasts political game began as the loyalty of his vassals was high enough, the duke was now forced to give up his second dukedom, leaving him only with one and put out in a political corner.

In Sep 52 the game was finally at an end as the last dukedom was revoked, and 9 counts that before belonged to the duke came under the direct vassalage of Avnfast, greatly increasing his scutage and centralising the kingdom.

In June 53 Avnfast had set his eyes on the second most powerful duke, the Duke of Karelia which held 5 counts ass vassals that would be much better served paying scutage to himself and mobilizing for himself.
The duke folded without protest against the immensely more powerful Avnfast.

December 14, 1153. A day which will live in infamy forever.
The very worst possible worst case scenario happened...
Sjællands culture turned swedish!! :(  :(
(Im danish :p )

In July 54 the last duke which Avnfast considering to powerful for his own good, the Duke of slesvig with 3 counts as vassals, was revoked.
and thus Avnfast deemed the kingdom as centralized as it was gonna get for now.

After a decade of provincial improvements. Libraries, docks, spinnings and great castles being contructed etc etc. The economy was centralized and at its prime briefly setting an income record of 97.45 a month.

With loyal vassals strightly on his control and a good economy and army, Avnfast felt it was time to go to war.

While the armies were mobilizing the count of Birlad after countless of offers from Avnfast finally saw the light and accepted to become his vassal.

As Avnfast went out campaigning he found a pretty wench of which he had his first (bastard) son, this proves that it is his wife that must be infertile and not himself!

Quickly finding that the sheikdom of Bacs in hungary have broken away from the muslim hordes, its just a sitting duck waiting to be shot, Avnfast decleares war on them and soon after annexes them.
There after he notices that the emirate of Zara on the balkan coast is also alone, and is quickly to decleare war on them and annex them.
However during this war Avnfast catches an illness and find it best to retire home to treat it, meanwhile he proclaimed himself Duke of Zara.

In June 57 Avnfast only 38 years old, developes Pneumonia. Its about time to think about heirs.

With all skills being vastly deteriorated Avnfast is no longer capable of administrating all of his demense, seeking to give some of them to his future successor he has to look faster than anticipated, and the results as expected are not as good, in the end he chooses Håkon av Munsö.

Meanwhile an interresting solution to the infertile wife problem came up.

Shortly after his second wife is burned as a heretic, he chooses his 3rd wife, Wulfhilde Von Venis.
After that he uses some of his prestige to grab the King of Scotland title.

However to his despair he finds out that håkan has been excommunicated and can no longer inherit the trhone! All hope seems lost when the most unlikely event of all happens.

Mere minutes before his death he becomes papal controller! He quickly revokes Håkans excommunication before he dies at March 13 1158.

End.
