War in the Pacific

With war rampant in Europe, Roosevelt sat at his desk at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and pondered the state of affairs. The US populace had been adamant about staying out of The European War (TEW), as they called it. Roosevelt concurred, European borders should be drawn by European powers, the US had drawn hers, and, as others set limits on where to draw them, so should had she. It was the Monroe Doctrine, it was a good plan and had kept the US out of TEW for four years, and as FDR read the reports before him, everything looked good.

Germany and her allies were at an impasse with the Soviets, and FDR + was sure that they would soon reach another accord. Peace in Europe could not be far off. The problem seemed to be the Japanese. The Nanking Massacre had the American public in a fury once, and they demanded action. FDR had pushed for a received an oil embargo against Japan in 1940, but with little interest in war the American people move on to other topics in the news. The demand for new radios, ringer washers, and Victrolas was high. Automobile sales were up, (any color as long as it was black), and Henry Ford’s 2N Tractor was revolutionizing farming, (a 2 bottom plow, and no mule.)

FDR smiled, he had guided the US out of the Great Depression, kept her out of TEW, and had instilled a new pride in the country. Pressed by a workload no one would want he pushed the pile of reports aside, and wheeled himself a meeting. As he leaves the office, an additional report, somehow falls from the cache…

Agent Albert Simons waited till the President left the Oval office, it was his job to check the room after the President left, and he picked up the report and placed in on the desk in a prominent place. If he had only known that this was the most critical piece of information in the country.

Four hours later Albert clocked out, and went home still wondering what “Torah, Torah, Torah”, meant.

MODS PLEASE DELETE, DOUBLE POST, Sorry

He posted the same thind twice DUMMI ;)

So you are playing as the USA, and are going to clean house in the Pacific? Well, good luck. I was never very good at the whole navy thing. I can do the whole blitzing small, poor, defenseless nations, but haven't graduated to naval warfare on the grand scale yet. I kid, I kid. Keep up the posting, and I will be back to read.

Calm down there, tiger. Take a deep breath, and lay off the crack cocaine. An update will come, I promise you. Good things happen to those who wait.

With most of the world at war, Franklin Roosevelt had managed to keep the US out of the combat, living up to a campaign promise during the last election. The European War seemed to be taking its toll on Germany. While the Germans were pushing toward Stalingrad at an alarming pace the UK, aided by Australian forces had taken Rome and Tirana, and established beachheads there.

13 divisions, commanded by General Ismay, who had seven air divisions at his disposal, occupied Roma. General Dill was trying to take the town of Napoli, and seemed to be having some success. Gen. Bastio’s forces were somewhat out gunned by the English and slowly falling back.

In the United States there was little concern that the Allies were winning the war, so little that when invited to join the Allies Congress flatly refused. America was watching the build up of Japanese forces in the Pacific. Successes in her war with Nationalist China, made the Japanese start to concern themselves with further expansion, and with resorces. Angered by the Mikado, the IJN was commissioned to make an example of the American fleet. Admiral Yamamoto was tasked with this operation. Carefully studying US fleet maneuvers, he set his plan in motion.

US military planners, concerned that Japanese forces might try to push them out of the Pacific, deployed forces to the islands of Midway, (1st Marine Corps Commanded by FM Adams, 5 div w/art& Eng), Johnston, (1 US Army mot. Div w/art, Gen Stillwell) Palmyra (30th ‘Old Hickory Div, commanded by Gen Simpson), Baker (41st ‘Sunset Div. Commanded by Gen. Kepner), Wake (2 divisions formed the 2nd corps, commanded by Gen. Moore, mot. inf. w/art), and Guam (the 2nd Marine Corps, 5 divisions w/art support, commanded by FM Vandergrift).

As a further precautionary measure the Lexington Battle group was redeployed to Pearl Harbor. This power projection maneuver was intended to make the IJN rethink any expansion east.

NOO! Wait... I forgot, you cant attack ships in a port. Lucky... so very lucky...

Jul 25, 1942 the Yorktown Battle Group is ordered to conduct training operations in the Gulf of Alaska. Paccom decided to make this the training exercise of the year, and ordered the Enterprise BG, Ranger BG, and The Wasp BG to participate in what it called Operation Otter.

In the cold waters of the Gulf of Alaska, Admiral Halsey was directing late evening training operations, planes were launching from four carriers, carrying out dummy bomb runs against decoy targets. Suddenly, a blip on radar indicated the presence of a fleet of a large number of ships. Halsey radioed Pearl, the area was supposed to be secure, no convoys or private shipping. While waiting for a response he suddenly changed aircraft orders, the TB1-F’s under command of Air Marshal Geiger went to CAP duties, and as the TBF-1’ landed they were rearmed with live bombs.

Recon planes were dispatched, but as darkness began to fall there seemed to be no way to get a visual on the incoming fleet. Halsey ordered the ships at his disposal to form a line of battle and waited to confirm the radar signal.

He didn’t have long to wait. The radar image turned out to be five Japanese CA’s and a DD escort! This was a sudden attack on the US fleet and would later be called an act of infamy by the US President in an address to the American people.

The Japanese opened fire on at 0300 hours, but Halsey had 80% of his planes rearmed, and in the air. The air power was devastating, even at night, Halsey’s planes devastated Toyoda’s cruisers. Within the first hour, the Haguro went under; at the same time the Kinugasa took a fatal hit. Two torpedo bombers had scored direct hits, and her crew was now busy with damage control.

By 0500 the Kinugasa was a flaming wreck, yet the other Japanese ships continued to fight on.

HAH! Pearl Harbor has been avenged! Go 'Bull'!!!

Operation Otter is supposed to lend credence to the US response to the Japanese DOW, that was about a month ago. I am now trying to document the naval war. There was no Pearl Harbor; the problems encountered by the Pacific Fleet are now the reason the US is at war with Japan.
