The Phoenix Nation- A Polish DW 5.2b 1399 AAR

This is my first AAR and I don't want to do anything too fancy, just keep Poland strong and her neighbors weak. And murder the HRE if I need to keep it interesting:happy:.

Set up:
  • DW 5.2b - The low manpower in 5.2b is a something I'm going to have to pay attention to. It's very possible for my manpower to run out during a war with the Golden Horde.
  • Very Hard
  • Historical Nations are lucky. I want Muscovy, Austria and the Ottomans to be legit threats.
House Rules:
  • No Reloading - screwing up makes the game more interesting.
  • don't cross the infamy limit
  • I'm not westernizing till I get my Winged Hussars
Short Term Objectives:
  • Start eating away at the HRE while Bohemia is still Emperor. If Austria gets control I'll be crushed by the gold mines and the man power.
  • Hungary starts out without a heir, I want to create a personal Union ASAP. It's a valuable buffer-state and I don't want Austria to get it.
  • Avoid the Golden Horde for a bit. Let them ransack Moscow.
Long term Objectives:
  • Survive
  • Dismantle the HRE
  • Create a system of Vassals as buffer states between my more powerful enemies.
  • Spread the Polish culture to historically significant cities (Danzig, Kiev, Vilna)
  • Keep the Russians weak and divided.

Another Polish AAR. This one starts in 1399?? The Horde is about to become your best FRIEND!! Keep Moldova safe. If it Falls, it gives access to Hungary. Hungary gives access to Bohemia And Austria. You DO NOT want Austria to snake into the Horde. Trust me.

Other then that, I look forward to this with Glee. 6 Polish AAR's have been started in the Last Month. of them, none have made it to chapter 3..... PLEASE MAKE THIS STORY LAST!!! I been wanting a Polish AAR for some time now, and everyone is throwing salt in my wounds..... Good Luck!!!

Opening

Poland starts at war with the golden horde and has a Personal Union with Lithuania. The problem with the PU is that when the AI has more troops then you it tries to break out by insulting you during peacetime. My remedy is to be in a constant state of war until I can build up enough men. Additionally, I start out with Mazovia(newa vassal in 5.2b) and Moldavia as vassals. Poland has also been given a University in
Krakow.

There are a couple of thing I want do before I unpause. I centralize and lose one stability. I immediately pay tribute to get out of my war with the Golden Horde, the GH has waves of men which will grind down my(and Lithuania's) manpower which is much more scarce in 5.2b. Out of the available advisers I hire a 5 stability guy. I leave the rest of my slots open. I'll be looking for Infamy and Inflation reduction later on but for now Polands' too poor to afford that.

I also have a conquest CB on the Teutonic Knights but right now I have bigger plans. I Offer Alliance to Austria and Royal Marriage to Hungary. Then as soon as possible I claim the throne in Hungary. I'm hoping Austria and Lithuania will do the heavy lifting for me. As I'm waiting to declare war, Hungary allies with Pomerania and Bohemia and invades Ragusa. I consider this a plus as I can snatch some provinces from Bohemia and vassalize Pommeria. Assuming Austria distracts Bohemia. Assuming.

NlHypoV.jpg

Turns out this is a big assumption because Austria seems to be a bit tied up invading Milan. More foreboding Burgundy is in the mix too. I decided to declare war anyway. Fortune favors the bold right?

Declaring war on Hungary brings my stability down to -2. Stay strong Poland!

should not be a problem if Hungary is PU'ed fast enough

Chapter 1

When I declare war, the Hungarian and Bohemian forces immediately march into Austria. A lone 12k stack of Bohemians heroically charges into Poland and is immediately annihilated, leaving me alone with Pomerania and the undefended Bohemia.

7Di4sPS.jpg

I suspect that there is another stack of Hungarians occupying Ragusa which just keeps them off my back a little longer.

Then without any real resistance I begin occupying both Bohemia and Pomerania. This war also gives me the bonus of slowing down the conquest of Milan from my current-ally/future-enemy Austria.

KH9VKfF.jpg

The Bohemians try to get me out of their capital but I'm able to move in surrounding troops and easily fight them off. Hungary also annexes Ragusa, which is a plus, just growing my future kingdom a little bigger.

gRTrZmw.jpg

I peace out with Bohemia, taking manpower rich Breslau and ending the vassalization of Silesia, which then keeps Silesia in the war for me to immediately vassalize.

I6kj3yA.jpg

I then move on to occupying Hungary trying to take as much land as possible because I'm worried that Austria will white peace out or even worse still, take some Hungarian land. Then I get this nice little event. Cores on Brandenburg, Bohemia, Teutonic Order and Hungary. The Hungarian and Teutonic Order ones are pointless cause my mission right now gives me a core on Warmia(I cancel that and get a new mission for Danzig) and I plan on inheriting Hungary but the other two are a nice bonus.

vQqv79K.jpg

As excited I was to get my new cores, my good luck is balanced out when my king dies leaving his 1 year old King in regency. The council at least has 9/9/3 stats and the new king stats are also good at 7/8/8.

pcrgbKR.jpg

I finally finish occupying Pomerania and I make them my vassal. I also steal Hinterpommen as I figure I'll have plenty of time to burn off infamy waiting for my king to grow up.

9nUTdSG.jpg

Soon afterwards I enforce my Personal Union on Hungary and then white peace the Milan war leaving Austria to deal with that. I move my national focus up north towards Hinterpommen and begin a settlement policy. I figure that I'm going to want to move my focus up there anyway when I get Danzig. I also remove Hinterpommen and Breslau from the HRE to avoid the annoying stability loss events.

OOJCYYW.jpg

My war seems to have had unintentional consequences though. My weakening of Bohemia seems to have put Austria in line to take the HRE. If/when Austria becomes emperor, it's army will be too big for me to take on, even with my sidekicks of Hungary and Lithuania, effectively ending my expansion west.

T76prLm.jpg

I want to take a few years off and try to recover my manpower from the constant war but hardly a year goes by before Muscovy and the Teutonic order invade for some Muscovy cores on Lithuania.

h9MOoUB.jpg

I'm going to end on that little cliffhanger.

The troop advantage you have is ridiculous. A player would've been able to do it, but the AI? No way.
Great AAR btw. Poland 1399 is very interesting to play.

Nice start. You should be able to hold Russia off. With CBs working both ways you should be able to use Muscovy's Reconquest to take your cores from TO for 0 infamy.
I will be following!

Chapter 2: Polish - Muscovy War

As the war starts the numerous armies of my allies march into Muscovy, even Austria joins in the fun. I should also note that Novgorod has also joined in to kick Muscovy.

x7gvakz.jpg

I focus on the Teutonic Order, as I want to get the my rich Danzig core most of all. I also get hit with another stability loss event.

P4wDjbS.jpg

Meanwhile the Crimea breaks off from the Golden Horde and declares war on me. I peace out of that war, my hands are full.

ZntTei6.jpg

Eventually, I'm able to get the Teutonic Order to peace out and give me Danzig and Samogita for 3 infamy each. I figure I'll take my core Warmia later for free. Danzig is too rich to pass up on even for the infamy. As for Samogita I figured I'd take it as it was still pagan and I could convert the culture to Polish.

givUPSS.jpg

My current mission fires and gives me a core on Danzig. My new mission is now to annex Mazovia which will give me something to do while I'm waiting for my king to grow up.

YyFvCFC.jpg

Finally, I wipe out the last of Muscovy's forces. I decided not to take any territory. The Golden Horde has declared war on them and I figure if I let the GH take over Muscovy I can later annex the territoriality infamy free from the horde. I also want to let my manpower recharge as the non-stop war for the past seven years has worn it down.

iOnXcnn.jpg

I begin a settlement policy on Danzig. I want that sweet tax bonus on my richest province. When I get the gold I may even put a trade center on it.
The next few years are sort of boring, I spend it bribing Lithuania and Hungary as there larger armies make them want to break out of our unions. I forgot how useful war is for keeping them occupied and not insulting me.

ClCwPbv.jpg

However back up in Russia something troubling happens. Even though they had literally no troops when I left them, Muscovy has managed to beat back the GH and is now colonizing territory. My brilliant plan has backfired.

whhG8dU.jpg

It's hard to see in this screenshot but Muscovy has occupied much of the GH.

Chapter 3 - Collapse and Scramble for the Golden Horde

This chapter starts with me letting my two main sidekicks Hungary and Lithuania invade the Golden Horde while I try to recharge my ever depleted man power. If I'm really lucky Lithuania will occupy, colonize and convert the Golden Horde territory's for me. I finally get to government 4 and take military drill.
inMwzoa.jpg

My truce with Crimea expires and I send my troops over to begin occupying it before Genoa conquers it. My settlement policy in Hinterpommen pops, free up colonists at a very convenient time

USp0Gcr.jpg

Unfortunately, one of my little vassals seems to win the siege on the Golden Horde. I'm gonna have to shell out to colonize the GH. I get hit with another stability lost event in which feels like the tenth time in as many years. I should note Genoa has white peaced out leaving Crimea to me.

Just so everyone understands you can colonize horde countries through your vassals and Personal Unions.

k73ISbD.jpg

I encounter a lone 12k GH stack which has avoided Muscovy. But otherwise I'm left to colonize resistance free.

MamOivH.jpg

As I'm watching my colonist numbers tick up and I get Narrow-minded or Innovative event with another stability lost. I choose Narrow-minded, I'm gonna need the missionary boost to convert the horde territory. Soon my king comes of age.

osYHzvZ.jpg

My other settlement policy pops converting the good people of Danzig to the ways of Poland, freeing up the rest of my colonists to spend on the horde land.

Polish culture spreads even more as the Pagan Lithuanians in Samogita embrace both the Catholic faith and Polish culture.

v5U4kQS.jpg

That's the end of this little update. Next time I'll be trying to claim some of my cores in the west. I should have that up in the next twos days. Thanks everyone for commenting!

hehe kind of reminds me of one of the old games where I played denmark and pushed pagan zelots all over TO so that I could culture convert all of it, turned out it was not the most effective tactic in a multiplayer game since I wasted to much time and effort with it
