An AAR of undetermined nature

Hi guys, I haven't really been on the forums in a while, but I've started playing EU3 again. Last time I played a lot, I wrote a short-lived AAR with Mantua. I don't want to get bored with the game, so I want to try and do another AAR. I'm just having a little trouble deciding what country to play as!

If anyone wants to suggest a country for me to do an AAR as, I'll see what the most common suggestion is and do an AAR as that country. Thanks! I'm really looking forward to this. :D

Hello! I am Acanthus, and I am writing an AAR revolving around the Papal States! I am definitely not guaranteeing that it will be a good one, but it should be entertaining enough. Everyone here pretty much knows about the Papal States, so I'm not going to write a big summary of it. I'm just going to set some rules for myself, and get on my way!

All settings are normal; normal leaders/events, normal difficulty, normal inflation, normal province spread, and random lucky nations. No cheating!

I don't really have a set plan for this game, but I would like to "unite" Italy, maybe capture the Holy Lands, and create a economically strong nation, with a decent colonial empire. I'm starting in 1399, so I should have plenty of time.

Behold, the greatest nation in all of Europe! Or so it will be after I'm done with it. This is the Papal States, home of the Holy
Father. Roma and Romagna, separated by the lowly Urbino (not for long).

The state is almost completely Decentralized... which is not good news. At risk of insane revolts that I don't want to deal with right now, I move in the Narrowminded direction instead. Eventually, I will start heading in the Centralized direction; it's just too good to ignore.

So, the economy isn't that great. I decide that I'm going to risk some inflation to try and get the Pope on his feet. After that I will be VEHEMENTLY avoiding inflation. I also removed my merchants from Venezia and focused all of my trade attention on Liguria (I am in the Genoese trade league, after all).

With this change in policy comes and expected stability hit... no big deal!

Now, The Pope's first mission is to reclaim Ferrara from the House of Este. Ferrara is a pretty decent piece of land. It has a university (yay!), and it increases the Pope's coastal holdings. However, it will take a couple weeks of insults in order to not take a stability hit for having good relations. At this point, I kind of have an important choice. Do I take the stability hit and annex Ferrara now? Or do I wait, so that they can increase their number of guarantees and people that will try and hurt me? The answer lies ahead... time to unpause!

Well.... I completely failed. I went to annex Ferrara, and got "cascading alliance'd". First they took Romagna, then Naples annexed me. I am pretty disappointed. I will go practice more and make sure I can survive before posting here. I'm sorry guys.

It's one thread per AAR, so if you intend to have a "vote for the country I play" thingy again then please do the AAR in the same thread as the vote, we'll rename it for you as needed. Also, such votes are supposed to have a set of options (and, for future reference, take no more than a couple of days - no issues there in your case).

Threads merged.

I was thinking... it would be really cool if you tag-switched to a random Asian OPM and waited until the Pope moved to some German minor and played as the Pope again. Then you could have a goal to reclaim Rome and destroy all who cascaded alliances against you :)
