The idea of this war is to free the world from Communism. Of course, that means the communists have to take over a good chunk of it first. With a bit of cheating (loaded as SU and used the DI cheat) and save game file editing, I got things set up, then started out as USA.
The 1930s were a dark time for the free world. In the midst of the massive worldwide economic depression, democratic governments fell one after another to communism or hard line nationalist regimes.
While Germany and Italy became Fascist, many other nations followed the path of the Soviet Union. Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Norway, Finland, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Costa Rica all suffered communist revolutions. Together with the Soviet Union, Mongolia, and Tannu Tuva Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and Finland formed a Grand alliance.
Wary of potential communist agression, we (USA) began the process of fortifying our border with Mexico and island territories in the Pacific. Further, we enlarged the army to a repectable size and began a massive research project to improve the quality of our arms and tactics. We paid particular attention to industrial, electronic, and naval technoligies knowing that improved electronics and industry would enhance our research and production capabilites and that warships take a great deal of time to build.
Prior to the election of 1936, the Republican party sucessfully attacks the new deal as the first step in turning the United States into a Communist dicatorship. Following news reports of the opression of the Mexican people and the closing of our southern border, Alf M. Landon is elected president in a landslide victory. Republicans gain a 2-1 majority in the house and a majority in the Senate.
All is quiet until early 1938 when Japan goes to war against Nationalist China. (the Spainish civil war never happens) While progress is slow, Japan slowly gains ground against the Chinese.
In Europe, Hitler is sucessful in pressing the Austrians to join the reich, and Czechoslokavia joins the axis.
On September 1, 1939 Germany attacked Poland, and crushed that nation in less than two months. Pursuant to the terms of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, Germany then cedes eastern Poland to the USSR. The communists them go on to claim the Baltic states and eastern Romania.
In the winter of 1940, Germany procedes to annex Denmark. In the spring, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg are attacked. Germany annexes Luxembourg, and presses on into France. As the war drags on into the fall, Italy takes southern France. Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania join the war on the side of Germany.
April 1941: Germany attacks the communists. In the beginning they gain ground in eastern Poland and the Baltics. Soon the Soviets push them back to the Molotov-Ribbentrop line. Further, Bulgaria falls to the Turkish, and by the end of August Romania has been divided between the Turks and the Soviets and annexed. The soviets have taken control of the precious oil fields in Ploiesti. To make matters worse for the axis, Spain, bolstered by Mexican and Brazillian troops, begins to push into Italian controlled southern France.
The situation does not bode well for democracy. With the exceptions of Switzerland and Sweden, the european continent is split between the communists and the Fascists, and the People's Republic of Japan is gaining strength in the east.
