The Secret Mistake

Chapter 1

4:00 am Febuary 28th 1939

Downtown London

He walked briskly down the hall though he had no idea why he had been summoned here at four in the morning.

Whatever the reason it had to be important. Churchhill didnt call him to discuss the situation with the foreign embassies. Maybe the Germans had tried to join the allies to fight the soviet union. Yes that would explain it.

When he reached the oak door at the end of the hallway, before he could knock, a tired and grim voice said

"Come in Anthony."

Yes he was Anthony Eden, former foreign secretary of the British Empire. He had resigned early last year because of the totally insensible foriegn policy the PM conducted, and the PM's stance on the Germans expansion. Instead he was now part of Winston Churchills cabinent that would take office when he was elected in 1940. Hopefully.

"Do you know why you are here?" Winston often asked that to find out how far news had traveled. When he beckoned Anthony took a seat on the chair across from the desk that Winston was behind.

"No sir."

"Dont say sir when you are talking to me. We are friends not boss-worker."

"Then why cant i call you sir?" He asked innocently. Winston just sighed and shook his head.

"Well why am i here sir?"

"How do i put this? I'll be blunt. We, as the UK, have declared war upon the USA and now have a four front war even without the Germans. So much for Chamberlains talk of maintaining peace at all costs. I wonder how he will sell this to the public without a revolt.."

After his initial shock his mind was racing. Why would Chasmberlain declare war on our biggest potential ally? Sure there was a bit of tension since the fact that they refused to back us against the Germans but that was no reason to doom the British Empire!

Suddenly he was burning with questions.

"What are the four fronts? What was their reaction to this? Is their military up to covering that much land? Is ours? Is Chamberlain insane?" they all burst out at once.

"Well the second question is the one is your job. I heard merely minutes before i called you that he plans to announced it during his speech tomorrow so they might not know until our first strike-whatever that may be-hits. the last: He very well might be." A pause and a sip of tea from the mug he was holding. "Now the four fronts are Canada, The Far East, Africa, and of course the seas. The two biggest navies in the world are clashing and theirs is, unfortunatly more numerous and modernized. Our 5 carriers may be more than any other single nation but they are outdated next to the americans'. What little air force we can spare to canada can probably keep them busy if not eliminate them. As for the army, well our intel predicts that their 14 divisions will multiply to 100 by this time next year and Canada will be overun by december. If they gain supremacy of the seas our colonies will be gone by the end of next summer and the possibility of an invasion of the isles will be iminent. Do you think we can stop this if we get into office?"

He shook his head.

"No, if those rednecks gain the upper hand, they wont be stopped politically, industrially, or militarily."

"Well then go and get some sleep and meet me at parliament tomorrow at noon ready to protest this."

"I'll be on my way then."

Simultaneously

Chamberlains Office

"Do you honestly think this can work?" The question was adressed to the only other man in the room besides chamberlain himself. Sir Cyril Deverall.

"Yes i do sir. They will turn to the Germans for their need of an ally and civil war will erupt in both with a little help from us over the controversy of the decision. We then invade both simultaneously using the reserves of infantry that we are building up as we speak. They will be overun by '41, '42 at the latest."

"'42! Thats 2 years after the elections! We need to at least look like we are doing something!

"I have explained this many times before sir. The RN will eliminate all their carriers and battleships, therefore removing the threat that they pose. The RAF shall help canada dominate and bomb New englands air space and factories. And the land forces in india shall land in and annex the phillipines, and if possible, proceed to the scattered US islands across the pacific. We shall reduce them to their mainland for the final assault. Also if we can spare the troops an excursion into the south americas to capture Panama and open up another invasion route could help."

"It sounds easier said than done. Their navy has a large chance of destroying ours before the assault. But I shall trust you to the end as I always have."

"As I you."

Im relatively new to these forums and to the HOI series itself though i have played EU3 for a few years. This AAR is my first and is played in version 1.1 of HOI2 DD. This time has turned out shorter than expected but its merely to give you an idea of things to come. Somehow i get the feeling that Deverall doesnt like the british much;)

Please have some actual content to your comment, rather than just saying "first comment", rule_them_all.

As for this AAR, a four front war even without the Germans! War with the Americans! Good grief, I don't think I've ever seen this scenario ever done out before like this. It'll be very interesting to keep track of.

I didnt mention the Japanese and Italians..my navy is going to have to be huge. and WW3 with the soviets happens afterward..lol.

Both may be correct:D. lol. im working on the next update right now and should be ready by monday (sry im goin campin over the weekend). but does anybody have any suggestions to manpower? just curious cause ive got 1000 right now and it will drain fast if i make any prolonged campaign, say against the american homeland..

Nathan-Hopefully the British Empire can survive to let me see where this goes too.

Southcarolinian-yes i do believe it is. Anybody think im an idiot for taking the USA on just before the Greman blitzkrieg?

Did i ever mention that 16 of my 22 infantry divisions are in france and its difficult to move them by sea now since the usa has brought a carrier fleet from the pacific now that i have blockaded the eastern ports with close to my whole navy? Just thought id mention it..

Chapter 2

12:00 Febuary 28th

Buckingham Palace

He was nervous. He was a nervous man but today was extremely important. Hence he was at his worst. How could he call himself a Brit if he folded under pressure?

He wlked out unto the platform that he would deliver his speech on. It had to be crystaline perfect if he wished to carry out his plan. As he walked out he glimsped a face that confirmed his worst hopes: Churchill had slipped past the guards. Now he was going to be roasted alive on any blunder he made. And most of his speeches were full of those. This wasnt a speech. This was a death sentance.

He made it to the podium with a molecule of self-confidence left. He knew this could very well be the end of his career. Maybe his life. Possible the beginning of the largest english rebellion since the War of the Roses. He wondered which side he would end of being compared to when this was all over. Then he bagan his speech. Or until he was interupted by a leader of opposition.

"I am here today to announce a grave peice of news. This could shake our country to our core, or we can stand united and~"

"Would this grave peice of news have anything to do with our declaration of war on the United Staes of America? Or is it about the invasion of the Phillipines last night? Or how our whole navy left their German watches overnight, en route to their new posts, which would be blockading the north england ports and containg their navy before they could leave port?" The speaker was Churchill with a grim look of determination on his face. As soon as he made his first statement murmurs began in the crowd. They grew as he continued and revealed the facts that were known to none besides those few that were directly involved. Even the common soldier and sailor hadnt known until it was too late to abandon. Or so he thought.

"Yes it would have everything to do with that Mr. Churchill. My country we are now at war with the USA due to their betrayal of our trust and their position of intervention leaning towards aiding the Germans." This last part was not true-yet. They merely refused to help us in a future war against them. But it would be true soon enough if they had anticipated their moves well enough. "Due to the international broadcast of this speech i will not go into detail about this plan that we have to win this war. But you may know that our navy shall play a large part as always. But we shall fight! We shall defeat these americans who think that we rely on them so much! We shall prove that the allies do not need the USA to be succesful! We and France will commit every resource we have to rid the world of this american pretense for democracy and freedom. They say we need their mighty Industries. But we say different! India shall provide the manpower. The isles shall provide the factories. Our colonies shall provide the oil and supplies. We shall use the elements of god destroy this threat before it can damage us in our most desperate hour! We shall be victorious!"

At first there was silence as the shock settled in. Then a massive cheer erupted all over the world in the Bristish Empire and France alike. He had won over the men and woman of the British Empire and now we had a chance to win this war. Finally he had won a political victory over Churchill after numerous blunders, mistakes, and defeats. Now he was speechless at how easily the Brits had embraced the idea of going to war with our greatest ally.

-----------

I decided to break the speech and combat into two separate updates even if it makes it somewhat short. Now that chamberlain has public support how is Churchill supposed to gain office? ;). I would much rather had a few revolts but partisan activity is very low for some reason .

trekaddict-well there will just have to be some kind of accident happen in november 1940 then wont there?:D. and im tryin to read your AAR that i recently saw 'The British Empire against all odds' i think is the name. great AAR but im still reading through index 2.
