You could mod the time limit the other way (say, to 753 BC or "1 AVC") and create one hell of a Rise of Rome mod in the process---why not make Rome the one-province minor in a sea of Hellenic states?
Historical events for Alexander, a government change in 245 AVC (509 BC) turning the Romans from a monarchy to a republic, some jerking around of the colonization rates, population growth, and tech cost modifiers to turn the game into a colony race (a la Fantasia in EU2), maybe more of a mishmash of one-province states in Italy...
It's not enough to just play all those extra years---it'd be even better to give the player something to do and good start conditions for all those extra years.
