Well, Elijah came with this idea: before the game each one gives top3 preferences, then scripts randomly assigns countries based on top3 choice.

Is this idea going to be used ?

Hive is allowed to post "no" first as always :)

And now more serious. I am interested in such a script, because I plan to do a new Diplomacy Universalis (with country switching) after Destiny has finished (or when I feel like it).
It ought to be possible to have just random countries for each player too.

Then it would be a nice tool to have!

if you`ll be so rich knowledged, missions can be randomized of the given list same way

I like the random countries idea.. but perhaps that is because I generally don't care which country I play ;)
But random missions... this quickly becomes unfair I think.

missions are custom RP purpose, not eu2 ones

I don't like the original idea (as Tonio expected ;) ) simply because you must take so many things into consideration when assigning nations. For a normal game, that is.

But FAL's idea, I like. :)

What if 4 people have the same 3 nations in their top three?

one (and that will be Hive) would damn me, coz he gets other country :)

I see that nations are usually the same ones:
OE, Castile-Spain, France, Sweden, Austria, Muscowy-Russia, England
stronger players haven't enough courage to pick other nations.
Minors in the game are usually considered Poland, Portugal, Moghuls-Persia, Venice, BB, Denmark, NL (rarely China).
They are 15 nations at last. Usually GC has 155 tags, I reduced them in my ElioGC to 95 ones even if almost covering the whole world (Eski-Iceland, Maori-U01, Haiti, Paranà-U02 are in it).

I suggest some sort of bidding system like in Empires in Arms where you can get weak nation but in return don't have to earn as many Victory Points as the stronger nations.

Fx, Give each player 1000 points to distribute in secret as he sees fit among three nations. Highest bidder gets his nation. Then reduce the initial VPs with the second highest bid for each nation. Or something thereabouts. Equal bid points? Toss a coin.

VPs not interesting? Add/subtract ducats in the initial treasury along the same lines. It is ungrateful but challenging to play the less popular minor nations and it needs to be rewarded.

Ehrm, actually used that, but then allocated everything so first bidders went first and rolled against each other, second came second and so on.

Still some players will not get what they like.;)

a simular system was used in the cross quill and swords games so elijah didn't really come up with it as first

There is one HUGE problem with every system of country selection (random, bidding, first-come-first-served, etc);

PEOPLE ARE ASSHOLES!!!!

There are several types of assholes:

1. The Asshole who INSISTS on playing a specific country and threatens to quit if his demand isnt met. Usually this is a country that is vitally important to regional power balance; Venice, Brandenburg, Poland, Sweden, France. After they take the country, they proceed to run it into the ground and screw the whole game.

2. The Asshole who refuses to play specific country. Of course, this is the LAST IMPORTANT COUNTRY NEEDED TO PLAY; usually Austria, Spain, or Russia. (usually getting England, France, or OE isnt hard). They have perfectly logical reasons for not wanting to play that country. "I dont like the snow effect on my screen, it hurts my eyes" (Russia). "I dont like being squished in the middle of Europe" (Austria). "I dont like all the exploration/colonization" (Spain). However, this invariably results in someone else giving up the country THEY WANTED TO PLAY and taking the needed position; thus engendering a latent anger that may resurface later in the game. "Well you should have taken Russia then, asshole!"

3. The Asshole who chooses one country on the thread, then when you get into the chat lobby suddenly has a change of heart. "Well, I was thinking I would ACTUALLY like to play as Sweden." Then you do the shuffle and people get all pissed off. Maybe even in the end they relent and BEGRUDGINGLY accept the country that they PICKED!

4. The Asshole who says "I dont care what country I get" when you are picking countries. But when everyone else chooses and he gets placed in Portugal, the complaints begin. Wah wah wah! I dont really like Portugal! Now you have a full-blown martyr on your hands. Great!

5. The Asshole who wants to be placed next to people of vastly lower skills. The hardened veteran decides that he simply MUST play the OE when a relative noobie is in Austria and Russia. The GM asks him to switch to Venice to compensate for his skill advantages, he refuses. Game goes to hell as uber-OE runs rough-shod over the world.

6. The Asshole who, despite being a near total noob, simply must play a powerful and vitally important country in competition with several veterans. The noobie France between veteran Spain, Austria, and England. Game goes to hell as France becomes an impotent playground for its neighbors.

7. Im sure there are more types that the community can point out for us.

Bottom Line: People should be open to playing any country. They shouldnt complain about what country they get. They should allow the GM to place them where there would be balance in the game. Unfortunately, we dont live in that world. People are assholes. :(

And yes, I did post this message to make sure you know that I am indeed WATCHING YOU!

Heh, what about assholes who seem quite amenable to being the type of player you need, then drop out of sight on a moment's notice when something in their life suddenly demands their attention, causing them to drop out of the game in which they were a vital player? :p

Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

You are forgetting a historical masterpiece that was so hot it had to be exported from Paradox to Slargos.se!

Right.

Anyway, I forgot to mention that I disagree with you. An average EU2 game usually takes many months to complete, and I personally sure don't want to play a nation I'm not having fun with for that long.

Then the problem is your inability to enjoy variety, Hive.

Kinda like eating food. Isnt it a common joke in Europe about how American tourists want to eat McDonalds and other American food while they are on vacation there? Why travel all that way and insist on your own food preparation? So what if you like hamburgers, have a bratwurst. Try it!

There is only one country I really dont like to play and that is Spain. Despite that, I have played Spain on several occasions and tried to make the best of it. Why?

Because I like playing EU2 more than I dislike Spain.....
