My boyfriend bought me the Magicka game as a gift on steam for us to play together. The first 4 Chapter went smoothly. No errors whatsoever. After those chapters we were faced with an amazing amount of bugs or disconnect issues (?) No idea what was causing any of it. For 6 hours last night we experienced the "Black Screen" error. When my boyfrend hosted the game and clicked start, after the intro the game just showed a black screen with a cursor. We tried a VARIETY of things to fix this. Nothing worked.

He figured he we would have to go a chapter or two back and start over. Finally it worked but worse things just started occurring. After about 5-10 min into the game, and almost always during a battle, I would see myself moving but I could tell it wasn't in sync with what was going on.. I was healing myself and no heal and I was taking damage then I notice that I die from seeing nothing around me and all I can see is my boyfriend's character and I can tell he's attacking things and see him moving but other than that I see nothing. No enemies, no spells, nothing.

He also tried to continue without me and see if clearing a Chapter would kind of "reset" everything and clear the issues. It did work but again for the first 5-10 then I would not see enemies and only him running around.

6 hours of just complete frustration last night. We thought maybe it was because we were both playing at my house and that it would fix itself when he played at his own house and then me at mine (Since for the first 4 chapters of the game, we played at our own houses).

So, today is a new day and we're both at our own houses and immediately when we start the game... The bugs continue. For the first 8-10 attempts the loading bar after the intro-bit was stuck at about 95% He had to clear his progress. We're at Chapter 8. And I'm CONSTANTLY bugging out in the middle of the bridge during he fight. Bugging as in the same issue I've been saying which is me not seeing any enemies, not being able to tell what my health is at, though it's clear I'm dying from something, and only being able to see my boyfriend's toon.

The first 4 chapters worked fine... Since then... Our multiplayer experience has been horrible and I feel bad that my boyfriend bought this for me because he said he only enjoyed the game playing with another person. It's been a decent game... but these issues in multiplayer mode are ridiculous and the game is basically unplayable. Money not well spent.

If anyone has any advice or fixes, it would be great. Even though I've spent several hours looking for fixes & solutions only to find that these issues are common but with NO solutions. Thanks for your time and I advise anyone who considers purchasing this game for a fun multiplayer experience to seek elsewhere.

I'm not sure if this'll help but someone suggested this may help stability in MP:

Hello fellow Magickians,

Lately I've been hosting a couple of games and suffered a lot of client disconnects while hosting a game.
Clients would disconnect after 30 seconds to 2 minutes all with the standard disconnect error message.
By this point I already reinstalled the game/steam, drivers, etc, etc but this didn't solve the problem.

So I started packet sniffing my network and discovered a lot of TCP retransmissions were happening during the game.

What worked for me was disabling Jumbo Frames on my NIC and I could host games for hours without issues.

So if you have disconnect issues it might be worthwhile to check if you have enabled Jumbo Frames.

Fixing it:

The somewhat more permanent way:
If you don't need Jumbo Frames.

Go to >>Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections and open the properties of your Network card then select Configure > Advanced tab \
and you'll find a setting called Jumbo Frames you can disable this setting. (or lower the value to a setting that works for you)

The temporary way:
E.g. adjust the MTU value before running the the game.

Run the commands below from a administrative CMD line!

If you have Jumbo Frames enabled you most likely find a MTU higher than 1500
To show your MTU size run the following command:

netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces

(Your output might differ)

MTU MediaSenseState Bytes In Bytes Out Interface
------ --------------- --------- --------- -------------
1500 5 0 0 Local Area Connection
9198 1 0 0 Local Area Connection 2 <- in my case #2

To temporary change the MTU settings run the following command:

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection 2" mtu=1500

And after playing the game you could change the MTU back to the previous value of 9198 or whatever your previous setting was.

Hope this helps.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73GHz
Ram 6.1 GB
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870

I've done the obvious of checking the system requirements with Systemrequirementslab, though, even before I went there I figured there's no way I should be having problems. Like I said earlier, we've had no issues until Chapter 5. There's something else that's wrong and we've attempted and tried many different things to fix it but nothing so far. :(

Thank you for some of your suggestions so far. We've already tried the Jumbo Frames thing and no success there. We will keep looking even though it's looking pointless at this point.

Thanks for reporting this problem, Bustachaina.
We have encountered some similar problems, but not in the current-live build so far. I have some questions to clarify if this really is the same bug as we've encountered: When you die, is your boyfriend able to revive you? When you're dead, can you still summon elements that hover around your corpse?

We are currently trying to solve these problems, so thank you for any info you are able to provide.

Same problem here.

Forwarded 27016 port. I can see & create a lobby as a host. People join and I can chat with them : when I try to start a chapter 4 adventure game, I get the loading screen complete then I hear only the ambiance looped sound from the game and I only get a black screen with the cursor moving. If I do alt tab the black screen become white with the cursor. I must kill the 2 magicka.exe processes.

I've tried to start a Chapter 1 online game : it worked once but after the second cutscene, I only get blackscreen without the cursor. Help ?

I've encountered similar problems with a friend who bought the game two days ago.
Thoses problems happen ONLY in multiplayer, everything works very well in solo.

The first problem we encountered was when going down the stairs to go to the party in the tutorial. My friend got stucked with a black screen.
We passed the tutorial in solo and started playing chapter 2 together. Here when we fight goblins, we start to get out of sync.
We can see each other moving, but we can't see each other casting spells.
If one of us is killed, the other can resurect him but the resurected one still sees his caracter dead. At that point, if the host hits restart, he gets a black screen and can't do anything but relaunch the game.
One time, after a restart, we were both playing on the same character at the same time! (kinda funny)

We tried several solutions :
Checked jumbo frames (they were disabled for both of us)
Forwarded ports 7331 and 27016 TCP and UDP on our routers (we weren't able to see our games in the multiplayer lobby before that).
Tried to play in LAN mode using hamachi (without success, we weren't able to join the game using the hamachi IP).
Both of us hosted games with the same results.

It's very sad not being able to play in multiplayer as we see how much fun the game can offer.

Sikloy. My boyfriend CAN revive me... Yes. But I will never see it on my screen that it was done. I only see my boyfriend's movements. I do not see spells he conjures. I do not see the NPCs. I can see the animation if my boyfriend dies, however. If he does revive me, only he can see it on his screen, and then my toon dies because I can't control it. I don't know anything about "Summon elements." I asked my boyfriend what that could mean but he said that I didn't learn that because he continued playing the subsequent chapters on his own where he learned "summon element" "raise dead" etc...

He and I gave up attempting anymore as many hours have been spent searching for solutions and attempting it ourselves to no avail.

I noticed a pattern with disconnects. For instance Chapter 8 went perfect always until we reached the bridge battle and it was always after the middle of the bridge that I would disconnect. It seemed like every time a "script" happened before a big fight, it would mean that I was going to disconnect during the middle of the fight. In chapter 9 the script where the necromancer summoned guardians to protect the locked door at the run-down church. I would 100% always disconnect during the middle of the fight, about 2-3 min into the fight. My boyfriend had to continue playing without me for that chapter and move on. The same thing occurred at Chapter 6 after a scripted scene and I would disconnect during the middle of the fight.

Hope this helps. Thank you.

Bustachaina, unfortunatly you had some really bad timing. Last week there was a steam update which led to a lot of multiplayer issues in many games, Magicka being one of them. If you update your steam client (Steam->Check for Steam Client updates - in steams top menu) all multiplayer problems should be resolved.

I hope the rest of your Magicka experience will be more enjoyable =)

Good to hear! :)
