First a very quick question about shipyards, if you get a province after a peace treaty with a shipyard in it, do you get the shipyard then ? Second could someone tell me why I would like to make TPs ? As far as I've seen you get a harbor with a colony, but not with a TP. You can build a colony up further and get more people for it.... Do you get much higher income from a TP or is it simply that building TP's are cheaper than building colonies ? Yes, you get the shipyard. Of course.

Trading posts are much cheaper to found than colonies, and they provide a higher trade income than a stage 1-3 colony. If you build it up it will provide the same trading income as a large city.
