What happens if, as the Spanish, I decide I don't like the Pope's silly pronouncements and go after India or something? And defeat Portugal in the process. Can I demand provinces in Asia if I get them in the war? Do I get a drop in stabiliity? higher BB? Anyone know? I was just thinking it would be easier to let the Portugese do the dirty work and then just defeat them in a war and take what I want.

I recently discovered that not only can the Portugese take your provinces without war (which I incidently have never seen them do), they can also attack your armies. This happened when I, as France, wanted to set up a trading post in a province in South Africa. The Portugese had an army there (they had dutifully destroyed the native population for me :D). I wanted to put an army there too to help my colonization rate. Well, I was pretty shocked when my 2k army arrived there and was routed by the 8k Portugese army despite peace and high relations...

So I will second you on that: Damn the Treaty of Tordesillas! :)

Well, take provinces without a declaration of war does include fighting. Just no official declaration of war.

And Portugal inderdeed doesn't use the Treaty very well.

Unless Portugal is under Habsburg rule :D

MINE!

I agree however, Portugese AI is not too active against others in their area.

See, I'd come to the conclusion that human players aren't allowed to use the Treaty to their advantage (it never let me walk into foreign colonies.)

Then last night it actually allowed me to take over two French trading posts, thereby booting the French out of central america .. then it blocked them all off again. I wasn't allowed to put troops into any french TP in Africa, nor the ones they built in north america to replace the ones I already took.

Anybody know exactly when I should be allowed to take them, and how? (Yes, yes, I know, read Huszic's FAQ. I'm downloading Mozilla in the background, gimme a break already.)

You can only occupy colonies and TPs in the provinces assigned to you by the Treaty. Thus, Spain could take control of French colonies in Central American, but not in Africa, while Portugal could do vice versa. Note that much of North America isn't assigned to the Spanish.

I figured it all out now, I think. They also have to be Catholic colonies... kinds sucks that the Treaty didn't take effect till after Calvin, now I have Reformist trading posts all over my patch

I was attacked too by a spanish army in america when I entered their colony (or trade post), while retreating after a peace treaty. I wondered why they attacked me (since you can usually retreat through the territory of your former ennemy) but perhaps it's related to Tordessillas...

Anyway, it's an important information. I believed Spain and Portugal couldn't seize your colonies when you had troops there. So I made sure I had a minimal army in every trade post/colony covered by Tordessillas, believing I would be safe. It seems I've been only lucky...
