I was reading how the French II corps was decimated in Russia by Typhus and Dysentery the other night (I know light reading). I was wondering how the game was going to take in illness and attrition into account.

Not to mention Napoleon's Egyptian campaign and the horrendous bubonic plague that struck his men.

So, excellent point. I would love to know how this is implemented.

Agreed 100%. We are still working out something that ould prove satisfactory here...

It will be interesting what you go with. Be it a "province" thing for passing troops (not to realistic) a unit modifier, or a blatant you got typhus you lose X men.

(added graphic for general discussion - Charles Joseph Minard's graphical chart of Napolean's 1812 march to Moscow (and retreat back).

This reflects the OP's question, the game needs to reflect how forces are winnowed away in detaching forces of occupation, used to patrol supply, illness, desertion (as an effect or moral?), weather, all kinds of factors that impact the number of troops a commander has available for a campaign and battle.

I mentioned this in another thread but it's valid here too imo so here goes: I've always wondered if a kind of pre-campaign mini-game (parallel game?) might be somehow integrated into a grand strategy game such as this. Let me be more specific; though Napoleon was a masterful general, I've always found myself being blown away by how minutely he prepared his campaigns months, sometimes years before setting off to war. He would sometimes secretely funnel a huge amount of resources into one campaign to make sure everything is ready when the time comes. It would be interesting to find a way to do that in the game; maybe have some sort of campaign screen in which you organise your best generals into a sort of think-tank to consult with them, set deadlines, allocate resources for them to make preparations and so on.

Example: Invasion of Russia. You skim through the list of marshals you have and select the ones who are more adept at navigating the terrain, others who have family ties in the Russian nobility thus opening possible routes through which to funnel info etc etc. Maybe organise a network of spies to send them deep into enemy territory to have detailed and updated maps of the terrain drawn, infiltrate barracks, armouries to obtain troop lists and equipment inventories etc etc... and you basically move on from there till you have enough men, resources and intel to push ahead with the invasion.

What do you think? I always find it interesting when you have generals/politicians who give you feedback in strategy games. Might be a nice addition.

I'm not worried about this because the Clausewitz engine has always taken weather and supply limits into consideration when determining attrition. I know that I have had Napoleonic-like experiences within the borders of Russia during the winter on several occaisions. Same with large armies in the tropics. I am sure that Philippe will fine-tune things to fit the era so that everyone will be happy; except of course when you see your army melting away to starvation and severe weather.

Attrition is a given but it'd still be great to have the plagues as a chain of events
