turning a MAJOR to a MINOR

I need some help with editing out the MAJOR status of a nation. I am playing my Saxony game, I have conquered Bohemia, Bavaria and diplomatically annexed Thueringen. In 1580 I unleashed on Austria, and after a lenghty war I captured every single province. Only to find out that I cannot annex. (the golden shield)

So after offering peace for 3 provinces - war exhaustion was killing me, I saved, read this board and found out that if I edit my save game, where it says MAJOR = YES to MAJOR = NO for Austria... then I will be fine. I did that, loaded the game, took me 15 years to get the right conditions for an attack... and once everything fell into my hands again, guess what? Austria was still a major nation, incapable of being annexed.

It doesn't work! I read the faq, about deleting those things, and when I load my game I find myself back at the desktop. Can anyone help me?/

delete again....

I think you did a mistake by editing the file.When you delete the information of austria,be very carefull with all signs.When i edited games to integrate a new player in an existing MP game,i learned one sign was 1 space away from right.That one caused always crashes.So try it again very slowly.
