I select new single player, choose any country, select normal or ironman mode (doesn't matter), set save game name (if iron man), press start game and then after initializing for a bit (not animated hourglas) the game crashes.

Yesterday with the exact same hardware I could play smoothly, but I had to reinstall my os. The game installation wasn't touched.

I scanned the installation using steam and it says it's fine.

Okay, I figured it out.

The launcher doesn't seem to sync it's settings to the cloud so very old mods (with exclamation mark) were again activated.

You should think about syncing settings to the cloud or displaying any warning when starting a new game if the mods are outdated.

or displaying any warning when starting a new game if the mods are outdated.
There is already a yellow exclamation mark next to the play button if you use outdated mods. Showing a popup warning would be very annoying, because many users use mods which have not been updated, but still work.
