well i just saved the game and during the save the game ctd'ed (like so many other times). problem is that when i load the game, half the world has no countries in it... obviously this game is broken beyond repair. now, the other problem is so far i've only been using the same savegamefile. does hoi make backups of the previous savegame? i'll be damned if i had to start over AGAIN

my god, this game is getting to be ridiculous beyond any boundaries. i just started another (read: 10th game, out of which i havent been able to even get to the year 1938 even once) and yet again it gets corrupted during the saving.... jesus this game has the best replayability out of any game i know, since it's utterly impossible to even reach the end

If you have auto save turned on the you should have a backup with that. Both the autosave and the old autosave.

As for your crashes, it should not be doing that. post your system specs, publisher version eg Strategyfirst, Panvision ...
And I will help you out.

If it CTD in the middle of a save it is most likely lost.

i dont think my computer cares whether its saving or not it crashes on average every 5 to 15 minutes no matter what

as for my system stats:
AMD Athlon Barton 2500+
NF7-S nforce2ultra (latest drivers + bios)
512 MB Kingston HyperX DDR400
GeForce3 Ti-200 (latest drivers)
Maxtor 120GB SATA
Maxtor 20GB ATA
Soundblaster Live! value

note that my WinXP is also having a lot of bluescreen crashes and im at the process of replacing my underpowered generic 300 watts psu

as far as playing the game goes, i've learned my lesson: autosave on monthly, save every 10 days or so and always rotating through different savegames
oh yes and its the strategic first version, patched to 1.05c, picture pack and sprite pack installed

ohhhhhhhhhhh, kayyyyyyyyyyyyy
excuse me while i vent, but im kinda ticked off right now....

i just tried to play this game the past 30 minutes and the average crashing times are not between 5 and 15 minutes, they are within 5 minutes. for example: i play and i get a ctd. i restart the game and during the loading it ctds. i restart the game and it ctds during the load again. i restart the game and during the load i get a winxp bluescreen, some big error message including something about ntfs.exe or similar. i restart the computer and the game and load successfully. i play for 10 days and plan on saving. as soon as i hit save it ctds. i reload and it ctds again. i start the game a few seconds into the game, the top bar somehow slides down to the center of the screen, then ctds. i restart the game and the menu interface is messed up.... i push the unlabed, in one row overlapping buttons, only to get to another garbled menu. i quit the game and come here to share this crazyness with you guys..... im sorry but, i've really tried so hard to play this game. i was partly motivated by this game to buy myself all these new computer parts which in total cost me 700 bucks. but this is simply unplayable... i hope it gets better with the new psu (though im not so convinced) but till then i think ima stop even tryin

Have you done a memory upgrade to your PC recently? A common problem with PCs is if you have 2 of the same type but different manufacturers memorty chips they do not work well together. A side effect of that is random blue screens of death. This problem will show up especially when playing video games as they are memory intensive.

FYI: What country are you playing? I noticed if you play countries other than the main players in World War II and are using the CORE patch it does CTDs alot.

Given your system specs, and blue screens in general, I think perhaps you'd be better off at the Anandtech forums or something.

I'm not familiar with that NF7 motherboard, but my first suspicions would be chipset drivers and BIOS. So would yours be, from your comments. =)

Check your BIOS settings. For the nForce chipset, I've noticed that its vital to keep the memory freq the same as the bus freq in general. Option should read "Synch" or something.

I wouldn't blame HoI for this.

First if you are having problems with other programs then the fault is probabely not with HOI.

You can try and rename the AVI folder to AVI_back and make sure you have set the color depth to 16BIT.

Also if you have VIA drivers then they are known to be buggy.

well i did have a lot of these crashes with my previous system as well, which has been completely upgraded save the video and soundcards and the psu. the previous system was indeed with a via mobo, thats why i got rid of it. while my system does crash on other occcasions as well, i've never seen it this exteme in anything other than this game. on the other hand, gta3, which i used to play on hours without end completely stable crashes every 20 minutes or so too now.

First try this "You can try and rename the AVI folder to AVI_back and make sure you have set the color depth to 16BIT."

Also make sure your video drivers are up to date, also make sure you are using 1.05C.
You may also want to look at upgradeing your DirectX.
In fact please run a DirectX diagnostic.

I've built a lot of AMD systems, and they all ran stable except when I got an nForce2 mobo. That one, I didn't get to run properly. In the end, I replaced it with a KT333 board, which ran just fine.

If you have the possibility, I'd advise you to switch out that mobo for something else. VIA chipsets usually run very well when they've had a year or so to have their bugs ironed out and get the latest drivers and BIOS on top.

I would avoid, the VIA drivers, lots of Problem with HOI.

CTD

I have so far experienced at most one CTD so far with all my games with HOI 1.05c. No problems so far other than the reported bugs which i believe is promised for total fix by 1.06. I hope this is the last patch.

Lets hope the last patch needed for bug fixes, but not the last for additional features. ;)
