I am unable to play HOI2. Has had problems locking since purchased. I have checked my drivers, running DX 9c, renamed the AVI folder, changed resolution, turn off antivirus and all other running programs and disconnected from the network. Cannot even get all the way through the tutorial.

System is a laptopn with ATI Mobility radeon, P4 2.4G, 1G RAM. Has an onboard AC97 audio and I have a creative Audigy USB, tried with both.

It seems to work fine on my daughters W98 system, so it must be somthing with the laptop, but this is the only game I have problems with. Gal civ II works fine.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

DirectX Data

Requested DirectX dump. This was done without the Audigy USB sound, and is the same configutation I tried the game with last night and still hangs.

Well I see two problems:

1) You video driver looks out of date as it is two years old and new ones tend to come out once every couple of months.

2) Your MB uses VIA chip set, sorry but these drivers are known to be buggy, and since you use Win XP you cannot switch to native windows drivers therefore you are stuck with it. Not much really you can do about it except avoid their products next time, and make sure you always have the latest driver. Really I can't believe they can in good conscience still sell these things.

You may also want to take a look through jpd'd excellent FAQ on crashes in the Victoria Tech support forum. most or all of it applies to HOI2 as well.

Actually chipset appears to be Intel 845MP; looks like just a VIA USB controller (which seems rather odd).

Ya but it is the drivers that are buggy.

Yes, very likely the video driver is the problem. Unfortunately until their newest version (Catalyst 5.6) ATI didn't support their mobile chips directly (and even now they only support WinXP and only the ATI X700/X800 on a few brands). If your notebook vendor doesn't supply updated drivers you'd need to get modded drivers (http://www.omegadrivers.net) or a tool to make ATI's driver package work on notebooks (http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/).

Thanks for the links.
