Tried this game with 3 machines, 1 over the internet, 2 over lan. No matter what combination of hosts, firewall settings, router settings we are unable to get anyone to connect to each other at all (even the lan machines are unable to connect).
Tried version 1.03 and 1.04rc4, with the appropriate checksums.
Tried with firewalls setup and tried with them off entirely
Tried ports and DMZ.

Some combinations get no game host found (lan) over net get no error at all just doesn't connect.
Everyone had same version, and my copy is off (and lan copy) is off gamersgate, not sure where the internet guys copy is from. 1 machine is xp, other two are Vista.

Nothing works. Note every single other paradox game I own works in any of the above combinations. In the end we gave up and loaded armagedon and played that.

Any ideas as to the problem?

Exactly the same !

Same problem as described above.

We all bought our games over Steam, but we cant join through steam friends anyway.

We tried disabling our firewalls and antivirus, static and nonstatic IP´s, internet or LAN games ... NOTHING worked !

Any ideas ? - Anyone ?

We were running 2 Windows 7 64 bit machines and one Windows Vista 64 bit if that helps anything.

Update :
Tried updating to BETA 1.04 RC4, but with same result as above.

Does anyone know how the LAN-Games are created ? - Do they use DirectPlay ?

The machines have a strange issue :
Desktop (host) -> Laptop (client) - Laptop can see a game, but the game is greyed and can't be joined.
- If I disable any of the laptops network cards the game disappears, it only appears if both wireless and cable are active.
Laptop (host -> Desktop (client) - Desktop cannot see a game.

Updated DirectX on all machines ... Nothing ...
Updated Network drivers on all machines ... Nothing ...
Changed the network switch to another model ... Nothing ...
Tried opening all ports in my router ... Nothing ...

Gave up and tried HoI2 to see if the network was broken .... Worked like a charm.

What was changed in the network-code for AoD ?? - Something vital indeed .....

I know this sound stupid........but this worked for me and a friend of mine DISABLE UPNP in the router settings, and use hamachi to play on a lan, go to internet(in aod) and type in the hamachi ip there.
It worked first for me when we disabled UPNP:rofl: so it's worth trying that, considering it has worked for me on two networks.

Similar probs. Finally worked when we changed the problem machine to one with xp. Speed issues made it unplayable with 1.3 so we stopped just bs'd. Have had success with Gameranger though.

I gonna give this a go ...

Small correction.

What worked was using hamachi which is a VPN solution. It creates a virtual LAN between your computers and bypasses any router settings and what not. Thus, whatever router setting was blocking AOD is bypassed. In fact, you don't even need hamachi (though its the simplest to setup), you can use any VPN software.

Turning off UPNP does not help AOD connect. I've played plenty of games with it on. UPNP is infact very useful to a lot of applications and games as it allows applications to forward/open/close ports automatically on the router. That way, you don't have to manually forward them yourself. In fact, if AOD could get UPNP support, that would be awesome.

Hey UPNP off worked for us, and that is only thing we changed. While for you, the game might work perfectly with or without the feature, for us it clearly had some issues.
Could it possibly be the way certain routers implement this feature, or some other silly incompatibility?

Actually i just tried it now, i turned on UPNP, tried to join, 40 secs freeze, nothing happens. I turn off UPNP I can join instantly, this is all in hamachi.
I don't know why it works, but it works, and i've done it on two different routers. I have NO idea, why it's that way but its a solution...

Okay, me and my friend have the same trouble. Both legal, mine is retail his is steam.

We tried turning UPnP off and on...both doesnt work. No matter which connection (LAN-Hamachi, Internet) cant find a host.
And when either of us tries to start it over Gameranger it puts us in the main menu without working.

I realize its an old topic here, but some other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well, be sure when you are using hamachi that you both are in the same room(duh) Go into aod be sure no firewall or anything is blocking, note the hamachi ip of the host, you see it besides his name in hamachi. Write the hamachi ip into the internet option in multiplayer in aod. IF that doesn't work i have no idea.
