Unable to Run CK2

Re downloaded the game after about 1 year of not playing last time i ran it was with mods. Every time i open it i get a security pop up error windows 10 and when i go to my security settings history to see exactly the purpose the list is blank and it closes off. I know I had a similar issue when Manchu update arrived for EU4 but I fixed that by changing allowed programs EU4.exe on my windows defender, I've tried that trick on CK2 and did not work. Any tips or links that may help would be greatly appreciated.

What antivirus app do you use? add ck2game.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.


If that doesn't help DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

I'm sorry for the late response but I did add ck2game.exe to my exceptions or at least I think I did. I do have windows defender and I added ck2game as well to ransomware, Still not working this did fix my eu4 launcher from working properly. Heres the dxdiag upload

But you are getting some pretty serious errors against ck2game.exe in that dxdiag. If you run a Steam Verify operation against the game, does it find anything to fix?

The system.txt is 0 KB for me as well and i can not upload my setting.txt nor open it on my end. I no longer get the security pop error. I try to run ck2 through steam, click on ck2game in the folder and also tried to run as admin but I see my status in steam update to playing CK2 then go back to online.

You mean it exists but Notepad or whatever will not open it? That's a pretty serious problem right there ... !

Yes exactly, like i mentioned before the last time i played CK2 I was playing the AGOT mod.

Yes, but mods or the game itself have nothing to do with being able to open a text file with Notepad. I want to be sure I'm understanding you right; you find settings.txt but cannot open it with Notepad? Why not, what happens?

Ok I just want to make sure i give as much information as possible. When i click on the file my cursor brings up the loading wheel then after a few minutes it still doesnt pop up and the loading has stopped. I tried right clicking and put open with note pad and that didnt work either.

It hasn't been updated for over 2 years I see. Can you delete it?

Yes i deleted it. or can. But i cant delete CK2 to clean uninstall. This pops up.

Never seen that error before. Is your Windows Documents folder on OneDrive or some other such cloud service?
