Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

The AVI folder will not change unless you reinstall.
All that does is disable the intro graphics.
Nothing in game changes.

For your video card, just grab the newest driver.

If you do not want to run the latest drivers for both your operating system and your video card, I really don't know what to say, other than save often.

Maybe the next patch due out soon will help you some as well.

I imagine many different drivers were used.

When the game crashes, can you continue from the last save or does it always crash and you must start a new game?

Volume, yes, you can adjust it in the options menu.
