If you meet unknown monsters (drones) or enclaves the fleet info reveals what it is before researching it. It's an older issue from prev versions and still in 2.8 on Xbox.
Same for empire fleets. You see the USS etc in front of unknown ships and often know (if you play with your empires) which one it is.
