Really bizarre event happened in my current game which I've never seen before.

A federation member (tree of life hive mind) was happily contributing to a war I was in (quite one sided clerence of fallen empires before they wake up) when I suddenly got notified they had been destroyed.

I looked over first wandering if the AI had got much more brutal and maybe the fallen empire has slipped through with a planet cracker.

But no while the empire was gone all it's worlds where intact. Even weirder I managed to colonize a bunch of those worlds and found the empires pops just sitting there fine (although there homeworld did seem oddly unpopulated for later game).

I've assimilated the pops with no issues, and everything else seems normal.

It did make for a more interesting mid game (they where the number 4 power in galaxy with 10+ colonies and a megastructure, so there was a rush for there territory), but can't for the life of me see how it would happen, any ideas? Or is it just a bug?

Pops just chilling on a world without empire is the standard behavior (easy to reproduce by invading a one world empire before contact).

As for empire randomly deleting itself, there was an issue with biomass recently but that's not what's happening here.

Maybe a revolt including ALL the planets of the empire, that would first destroy the empire, try to spawn a second one by looking at first empire goverment, and failling to do do because first empire no longer exist?
I don't know in which order revolt events happen, so maybe that edge case doesn't exist.
