Chapter 1: Running for the President of the United States (Part 1)

“Dear fellow Americans. Last 4 years we were working hard to recover from economic and social depression. You’ve proven to be real Americans, full of faith, strong vision and will to acomplish your objectives. Our work is not yet finished and I know that. I also know I’ll be always with you, regardless I’m president or not. Prove your quality once more and continue our unfinished business until we know, that we were successful. God bless you! God bless America!” – that was speech of president F.D.Roosevelt few days before he announced his decision not to run for 2nd presidential term. His motives were not officialy announced, but it was more than clear it’s physical health that drove him to this – unpopular but understood – decision.

F.D.Roosevelt announcing his withdrawal from presidential elections '36

America was in wistful mood after that announcement. Many people, who were already decided to support re-election of president Roosevelt, now got to make new choice. But there were such, who have made their decision far before. Such was Chief of Navy, Grand Admiral Thomas Seidita.

He wans’t known among people much. Only few were able to connect his name with Joint Chiefs of Staff or Navy High Command. Before ’36 he focused himself mainly on navy, never participated in politics actively. He started his campaign earliest of all candidates. Take a look at one of his first public appearances as presidential candidate.

Mr. Thomas Seidita’s April '36 Support Meeting

It was held at early spring in small town near Norfolk, Virginia. T. Seidita, in white ceremonial uniform, approached podium, surrounded by maybe two or three thousand people. Sun was still low and it was shining directly onto tribune. Thus those, who were standing on it, could have hard time seeing the crowd.

„Good afternoon my fellow Americans,“ - beginned man in the uniform – „I come before you today to tell you some rather alarming facts. As it now stands the USA army is terribly small. A nation such as Mexico could quite easily march across much of the South-West virtually unopposed.“ as he made short break in his speech, there was significant upheaval in the crowd. He continued: „If I am elected President I promise a great increase in our nations defensive measures. We will put the American people back to work building ships, planes, tanks, rifles, artillery, all the requirements of a modern military force. Our military will not cower in the face of the growing Italian, German, and Japanese fleets.“ he was acclaimed by loud applause. „Our main weapon against these aggressor nations will be our military strength. Follow me on the path to modernization.“ Many were comfused by these words, but they felt his stamina and applauded again, some even chanted his name. Many of them were just soldiers and naval officers.

Chapter 1: Running for the President of the United States (Part 2)

Three Candidates
In May it was clear that Thomas Seidita will face two opponents. Each one aiming at differnet problems. Their names were Stephen K. May and general Daniel W. Guerra. First young politician, second army general.

S.K.May presented America oriented policy with American citizen on first place of his interest. „We have our own problems. The United States require a President's attention first, not the battlefields of Europe.“ That was his response to Seidita’s speech. „The American people must be cared for first! We must meet the needs of our civilians, put them to work on projects that will help America recover from this Depression.“ These were the words he used all during his campaign. His public appearances were always crowded by his followers. Declarations like the next one made people applauding virtually everywhere. „America's focus should be on improving the lives of our civilians first, and defending our territory second. I believe that with concentrated research into the fields of industry and electronics, as well as Naval and Air technology and warfare tactics, the United States will emerge as a great nation, envied by the world.“.

Such crowds were common on meetings of Stephen May during his presidential campaign

General Guerra and his cigar
Last who showed up in presidential campaign was general D.W.Guerra. He, as only candidate, has built his strategy on strong opposition against communism.
”As a veteran of the Great War I know that Germany should not be trusted, but I also have realized that the biggest threat to our way of life comes not from fascism, but from the Communist Soviet Union. This is why I consider Fascism as the lesser of two evils. Comunism and fascism on a lesser degree should not be allowed to expand and gain ground on Democracy. Thats why our armed forces must be in proper shape in case a conflict arises that threatens our glorious nation. Be it Fascism or Comunism.“
He also presented plan of employment programme, based on rise of military production and increased government military funding. These plans were heavily criticised in society, even among militaty representants.

General Daniel W. Guerra, third candidate for US president

General brimmed with self-confidence, so needed in his military job. Once, after his speech was over, general Guerra lit up a cigar. Right after that young reporter from the New York Times asked.
"Are you done Commander?"
"No, son. I have just begun!"
