I heard using hamachi is a great way to play the paradox grand strategy games online with a few friends, and I agreed with a few buddies to play sometime next week.

Fortunately, one of my friends just called me and asked about how hamachi works, and we decided to try connecting and see if it works.

It didn't.

We connected to hamachi and we were both in my network, but we didn't understand why we couldn't find the games we hosted. I tried to host, he couldn't find it, then he tried to host and I couldn't find it.

Is there something wrong with hamachi or are we just doing it wrong? How exactly are we supposed to do when we host and join? Will we have to change some of hamachi's settings? Should I convince him to bring his laptop to me so that we can connect with a normal LAN connection instead?

I once used hamachi with a friend too, but had the same problem. Fixed it by opening the router ports. So you have to open your router/firewall ports that HoI uses (2300-2400 & 28800-29000 & 47400-47700). Might not be the easiest thing to do, but I think that's the problem here.

This might help, explained these things already... http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=396089

Sure was complicated, I think I figured it out, hopefully that will work. Will my buddy have to go through the same thing or would that be unnecessary as we use hamachi? Besides, wouldn't opening the HoI required ports make it possible for us to play online, which we could not and therefore tried hamachi?

Complicated stuff, but thanks for trying to help, mister. I'll have to see next week if we can get it to work.

Well we both did the same too, so I suggest that your friend should open the ports as well. I can't say for sure that he has to, but this is complicated stuff and the comps rule the MP world, so can't tell. Better to do that, even for nothing, just to be sure, eh? ;)

Well, yes hamachi is supposed to be great coz you don't have to open ports for most games. But HoI isn't like most games, the multi is especially difficult to get working for some people. Took 6 months for me to figure this out myself and had to get a new router too. :eek:o ...Anyway if you don't get the game working on hamachi with your ports closed, then open them, it's that simple. What else could you do...

But good luck with your test, hope you get it working. This game is great on MP, got to say that. :)
