Short summary of your issue
Victoria 3 not starting properly via steam on ubuntu

Game Version
unknown

What OS are you playing on?
Linux

Do you have mods enabled?
No

Have you tried verifying your game files?
Yes

How much "pain" is this causing you?
5

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
I am trying to play Vic3 natively (i.e not via wine) on Linux (kubuntu 22.04). However, the program sits with this artwork and does not progress or change. The process is taking a decent amount of ram while it is sitting here too.
Here is a link to what I am stuck looking at I have tried running the game in fullscreen and windowed with no difference. I've also reinstalled the game twice and verified the game files each time. It is essentially like this right out of the box.

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
1. own my computer (kubuntu 22.-04 installed on a Thinkpad x13 AMD ryzen 7 gen 1). 2. install steam and then victoria 3 via steam 3. click play to run game 4. continue click play via paradox launcher 5. wait past the initializing screen with the couple on in

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?
not really

I have attached a save game
No

Hi! Thanks for reporting the issue.

We've received similar reports from other Linux configurations and are trying to gather data to add the issue to our database.
Could you try to launch the game again and then provide the zipped contents of your "home/local/share/Paradox Interactive/Victoria 3/logs" as well as the two "pdx_settings" files from "home/local/share/Paradox Interactive/Victoria 3"? That would assist greatly in identifying the cause of the issue.

Have a nice Wednesday!

Hi! We've received information that some of the launch issues that look similar to yours were fixed in the most recent patch.
Could you please confirm if the issue is still happening on the current game version (1.0.6)?

Hi. Thanks for the update. I tried again, but it still wouldn't work and I am stuck at my previous screenshot with no menu. I am hearing a coin-like sound this time though! I assume that this is the menu loading sound.
Attached are my files again

From that error log this is clearly a video issue. Please check you have the latest AMD video driver for your hardware, plus the latest Mesa version, I think they are on 22.x now.

If that doesn't help, run the ./Victoria3 executable from a terminal command line. What output do you see there?

I updated all of my drivers. I also checked the Mesa version and confirmed it was at least on 22.X (as the picture shows). There is no difference when I launch Vic3 whether by the executable file or through the launcher.
I am not sure if this is could be a permission issue of my machine. All other PDX games have worked out of the box so I am not sure why this one is different.

There is no difference when I launch Vic3 whether by the executable file or through the launcher.
Right, but is there any useful output when launched on the command line? Typically a missing or outdated lib would be mentioned there, for instance.

Looking that those I see the game is trying to use Vulkan, I don't believe any previous games of ours did that in Linux. I see this note in the AMD release:
To use AMD Vulkan driver in this stack, please make sure RADV driver is disabled and the Vulkan SDK 1.2.180 or later version is installed. The SDK can be downloaded from: https://vulkan.lunarg.com/sdk/home.
This is exceeding my knowledge and experience with recent Linux versions, but this this something you could try/look into?

Is there anything more that can be done to help me with this?
Not by us, I don't think. Can you contact support resources for your Linux distro, and/or AMD?

And the first to use Vulkan, it seems.

Reading that reddit post it is not clear if that code is from some app, the video driver/system, or something else. If it is believe to be a problem in the AMD Vulkan drivers there's nothing we can do about that!

If it's thought to be a bug in our game, it does seem odd that we don't have other such reports. But if you think that is the case you can make a formal Bug Report here.

Linux NVidia Vulkan Problem

I have the same problem. Interestingly, all used to work fine until like 14 Nov. Since then i seem to have updated nvidia drivers automatically. 510 that was.
Today, after long-awaited 1.1 i tried to launch it and got crash immediately after launcher -> play.
I went digging, updated nvidia driver to 525, and now the game launches, but gets stuck in the same way OP described.
Also vulkan ErrorDeviceLost error prints in logs. I didn't have any vulkan installation, installed vulkan-sdk, no changes.

I did manage to launch it under Proton ( GE -Proton7-24 ).
My GPU - Ryzen 7 4800H
nVidia driver - 525.60.11
Mesa - 22.3.0

I'd be happy to provide all debug data to fix the native version or the driver or whatever is actually causing it. Can somebody guide me how to do that?

At this point I'd recommend making a new thread in Bug Reports on this, and providing all the info you can there. QA can ask you for any extra detail they need there.
