Summary

Virtual Texturing takes forever

Steps to reproduce

Start the game

Expected Result

Being able to start the game and play

Actual Result

Two weeks ago I decided that I wanted to play another map so I went to the mod library and subscribed to another map, while doing so I also subscribed to some decals. When playing the new map the game crashed after an hour or so and since then I was not able play again because the virtual texturing always takes forever. On a side note: I had subscribed to some 50ish mods, downloaded expansion packs and some region packs before but starting the game and loading a safe file and playing was never an issue. My gaming experience was mostly smooth with CS2 so far. But now virtual texturing takes forever. In one occasion I decided to let CS2 just do it's thing, walked away did some household chores and came back two hours later and the game was still not done with the virtual texturing. After that I decided to uninstall, delete everything related to CS2 and install the game from scratch. Nothing changed. Then I tried starting the game with code mods disabled - still no improvement. Now I unsubscribed from all the mods and region packs, started the game with mods disabled and after 30 minutes the virtual texturing was done. Still my computer was struggling and as the game still lagged in the home menu I decided to exit the game. Once the game was shut my computer went back to relaxing state

Are you sure it's only because of Virtual Texturing?
It sounds like you use some custom decals and if the mod that is loading them cannot cache generated textures (Extra Asset Importer) it will need to process every single decal, every single time you start the game. This is brutal, menu screen will run like one fps and the process takes ages to complete since, so make sure the Extra Asset Importer is working properly when it comes to caching generated textures. When decals are correctly cached, they will be loaded in a blink of an eye (few seconds), same as Virtual Texturing, though keep in mind the speed of processing Virtual Textures is corelated with the fps you see in main menu, since the game is spreading the work across multiple frames to keep reasonable framerate in main menu and in result, there will be a certain number of frames required to complete such process.
Let's say there is a few hundred thousand textures, each frame the game will process x textures and it will take 10k frames in total to complete the process - if you see 300fps in the main menu whole process will take under a minute, but if you see 30fps it will be almost 6 minutes and if it's only 10fps then the process will take over 16 minutes.

Last note. You don't need to wait for virtual texturing to finish if it is the only task shown in the notification menu. You can select some savegame or start new game. Virtual textures processing will continue as a part of the loading process (it's a middle loading bar IIRC).
