Choosing advances at different levels bug

From what I have been able to see from the "list of bugs sticky" above, this bug has not yet been reported. I'm playing on 1.04a.

On the advances screen, when I select a military advance to research (let's say "bows") and choose the next available level (let's say level IV, levels I, II, and III having been discovered already), I click IV and then the seal icon at the bottom of the screen and then move to the next category of advances (economic or whatever). That's when problems happen.

In the econ advances, (let's say "farming techniques"), let's say the next available level to choose is level III, levels I & II in this tech having been discovered. So I click III, then click the seal. However, if you go back now to military advances and look under "bows" you will find that the "selection" (i.e., the highlighted box) for bows has now moved from IV down to III, mimicking the level of your choice in econ.

In other words, it seems that you can choose the specific FIELD in which to advance (bows, farming techniques, religious flexibility or whatever, as indicated by the red dot to the right of the list), but within those fields, the specific level (I, II, III, IV, or V) is always the same in every field as the level you last chose. There seems to be no way to make your level selction "stick" once you've chosen it or to be research different advances at different levels.

Am I hallucinating (it has been known to happen)? :D

Right, you realized, that you can only select the field of research and that the only level within a certain field that you can research is the next one. So, choosing a certain level to research would be totally unneccessary.

And that it is. Selecting the level does nothing to research it is just for you to take a look at the effects and a reminder of the coloring for the Tech spread on map.

That's the way it goes, tech advance is supposed to be bit random, partially to represent lack of total control in Medieval society. I think this bit is explained in the manual pretty well, you should take a look there, propably also in the FAQ forum.

Happy Crusading!

Well, at least I wasn't hallucinating. Thanks.

I did at first read the manual and the FAQ (but not very carefully), and so I was still confused. However, I would like to add that at Mr. T's suggestion I re-read the FAQ on Advances carefully, and found that it cleared things up about how it all works and the rationale behind it: ingenious!
