I'm playing Spain in the GC. The Palatinat has turned Protestant so I invade from Luxembourg. I besiege their capital with an army of 25,000+ men. They counter-attack with an army of 6,000 men and kick my arse.

Why ??? This does not make sense. I have the highest military tech, my troops have high morale and I outnumber them 5-1.

This isn't the first instance the combat part of EU has left me feeling frustrated.

- when I tried to invade Hessen their 10k army magically transformed into 35k when the battle started.

- I was at war with Turkey and they seemed to have some kind of teleport device to get their armies into the Spanish mainland and Naples.

Is the combat part of the game buggy or what ? I am starting to feel I am wasting my time with this.

I also lost battles where I was strongly outnumbering the opposition but at the end of the day I get a good overall result in battles if I don't do anything stupid. It isn't impossible for a 6K army to beat a 25K army. They could have had higher morale, more cavallery, ...

Reinforcements can also arrived in the midst of battle.

Oh, and that cunning teleport device would be a boat. More than one most likely, so basically what we call a fleet. They are known to be very handy to transport troops accross watery surfaces.

And this you are certain of ? (ie have you check it in your savegame)

troops have high morale

Compaired to what ? The green bar or relative your enemy ? Can bee a big difference. Also, do you pay 100% troop maintainance ?

I outnumber them 5-1.

Is that in all troop types Inf/Cav/Arty ? What terrain where you in btw? Did the enemy have a named/historical
general ?

The battle system is quite complex. I suggest a peak at my FAQ to understand it a bit better. There probably are very good reasons your getting your a** waxed.

when I tried to invade Hessen their 10k army magically transformed into 35k when the battle started.

There are several options to explain this, for instance
1) They built some new that was just finished when you attacked.
2) They have an ally that decided to help thme out.

You ever hear about ships? The AI knows too how to land troops from boats.

Generally no.

Sad to hear that, since your problems is most probably becourse you not yet beeing familiar enough with the game to notice everything going on. I would suggest to slow down the the game speed a bit and pause frequently, too be able to keep up. Reading the FAQs is a good idea too.

I was playing the game kind of stupidly, either having the game paused or on really fast speed. I'm playing my latest campaign at a constand 1 minute=1 month. It's a lot easier to follow what's happening, still can't make a lot of sense out of it though :)

How in the world can you do that... that's too slow!!

What do you do to pass the time when waiting for stuff to happen?

During peacetime I play at a faster speed, pause, do a bit of micro-managing, unpause. However, during war the only way to really see what's going on is at low speeds.
