I am currently playing Rome and am at war with Carthage. Around the year 675 AVC I had conquered just about everything that was left of them, aiming at taking a good number of provinces, once we make peace, and suddenly the war ended. My armies stood where a second before they had been besieging Carthaginian cities, but everything that had nicely been striped in red wasn't anymore. I got the message that I had "troops in foreign lands", nothing else notified me of the reason why the mayhem suddenly was over.

I reloaded the last saved game, having filed the problem as a hiccup the game might have suffered from, but, lo and behold, this time it happened after just a couple of months gametime instead of about two years.

This is happening with patch 1.3 installed.

Any advice?

Seems to me like you might be part of an alliance and the alliance leader is accepting peace with Carthage. Or you might have accepted peace with an ally of Carthage that happens to be their alliance leader.

Thanks, Sute, you are right. I was in fact the "junior" partner in a war where Massilia got attacked (despite being 60 times as large).

So, instead of a bug report, let me make a suggestion: It would be nice to get notified when the principal parties of a war you are involved in sign a peace treaty.

I also think that a vastly larger party should be in the role of the senior, especially if the smaller country involved pays tribute to you.
