I tried to savescum it, and this time the ward -- who was already ambitious -- received the ambitious/zealous/sadistic event with all three options available, including the trait he already had. If I select ambitious, nothing happens. If I select zealous or sadistic, he *loses ambitious, a trait he already had for two years.*

Something is broken here.

I tried running it again, this time removing the ward from my player character's care. Now he *lost his existing ambitious trait*, so he's set to turn 13 with *zero* traits.

Was the child traveling at some point ? There is actually an issue with the education trait that cannot fire for traveling child

Yes indeed, you nailed it. The child was on a pilgrimage. That's an awfully annoying bug to have to work around, considering that these trait events pop up every two years and a pilgrimage takes almost that long, but at least I'm relieved to have an answer.

The only problem is that this is an ironman game and I have a very limited number of "insurance saves" to savescum with. Ah, well. Live and learn.

Oh yeah the sermon event, got that constantly for like a decade before it fixed itself.

You got the sermon & the beating more than usual because those are the 2 events missing the availability check, that mean that you'll only get one of this 2 event if your child is traveling / in an activity

But I got the sermon constantly, and beating only a couple of times, for a long period of time, before that suddenly stopped happening with no change to behavior.

Each event has still their own condition to fire and their chance to happen, so maybe sermon has more chance to fire than beating in some cases, and for the sudden stop do you play with mods ?

The conditions might make sense, though it happened for a few kids, so its weird it happened to all. I dont play with mods

I just had a 6 year pilgrimage with my twin sons coming along. Age 12 and no personality traits. The personality events started firing again after I got home.
