Firstly, I am still using version 1.07, as I have not yet finished my game as Russia that I had started! So, if this is something that has already been cleared up by 1.08 or 1.09, my apologies.

As Russia, I am involved in the following war:

Austria, Genoa, Parma & Russia vs Poland-Lithuania, Venice, Savoy, Sardinia, Bavaria & Wurtemburg.

I have captured three provinces from Venice, and want to make a separate peace before my Austrian "allies" can make peace with P-L and leave me with nothing. After I do so, the war screen lists the following wars:

Austria, Genoa & Parma vs Poland-Lithuania, Savoy, Sardinia, Bavaria & Wurtemburg

Russia vs Poland-Lithuania, Savoy, Sardinia, Bavaria & Wurtemburg

Venice vs Austria, Genoa & Parma

So, despite the fact that I started the war allied with Austria, Genoa & Parma, and we are both still fighting P-L, Savoy, Sardinia, Bavaria & Wurtemburg, the computer now considers them separate wars. So, I cannot use the territory of my former allies for movement.

If u make separate peaces u bail out on ur allies and choose to go ur own path.

Which is why you get the conditions you describe above. You are still allied: the alliance is not broken, but for the duration of the war you are not fighting in unison any more.

This is why one minor nation brokering a separate peace with another minor nation can lead to you being stuck at war with someone like Helvetia, who can't be reached and can't reach you :D Hence the automatic, 36-month inactivity peace.

It's even worse when that minor is Savoye or so and ur Sweden and they somehow manage to get 5 men and a horse over to Sweden just before that 36 month period ends :D

I guess I had expected to still be fighting as allies against P-L, Savoy, Sardinia, Bavaria & Wurtemburg, but I can understand why my allies would be unhappy about me not continuing the fight against Venice.

Besides, I know that if I don't make the deal with Venice, Austria will surely give P-L a few ducats for peace, leaving me with nothing but a lot of nice Russian gravesites along the Adriatic! I would rather have Mantua & Pressburg.

Since you have secured two provinces from Venice, it's worth making peace with the leader of the remaining allies (presumably Poland?) even at the cost of 250D. If Poland are losing to Austria &co., they'll happily do so in order to build more troops.

Obviously making a separate peace is better. For u. U just suffer the consequances but who cares when u get 2 provinces ;)

Thanks for the replies BiB & Heyesey.

I did end up making peace with Venice, but not until after I snatched a third province from them (Styria).

Poland were not losing to the remainder of my allies, but they are no longer very strong (Austria have only 3 provinces left). So, I snatched a couple of Polish provinces, including Tyrol (which is now Orthodox!) before getting out of the war altogether.

Funny thing is that the war seems to be mostly over, except for Venice, who are still fighting Austria, Parma & Genoa. They jointly occupy the province of Venice, but Venice still holds Corfu, Crete & Cyprus. Hopefully they will eventually end the war...
