Having a nice run with the county of Orviety I got lucky and captured rich Genua along with it's Doge who was ransomed. With the new wealth aquired I tried to use the CB I had on my liege (the Pope) to replace him. I expected that my younger brother would get the papal seat or perhaps that I would get the Popes temporal domains of Rome and Spoleto but to my surprise nothing of these things happened. Instead my ruler himself became the new pope. I am certain that the player should not become Pope.

Why? Seems fine to me.

Nope.
Beeing pope you get spammed by messages about AI charakters asking for indulgence (no you don't any gold or the power to make a decision) and when your main charakter dies it is game over (or at least the in game warning tells me so)

That has to be the same error like when the Pope calls Jihad of Denmark.

Religious leaders should not be temporal Lords. I think it comes down to the way that the game sets the characters. i would stake that POPE is an Emperor level title thus you are screwed unless you are HRE or Byzantine Emperor. Best way to get rid of it is probably to hand the title to someone else whilst holding Rome if you like to hold Rome. But then it would destroy relations with the Pope who always wants to hold Rome. Must make it hard to reunite the Roman Empire.
