I have played many games as minor nations, and in every single game without fail the soviet union is conquered by Germany. And in most cases this complete conquest is done well earlier than it should! For example in my Persia game, the Soviet Union had bitter peace in 1938-1939! And as you know this is far from accurate.

In another game as Saudi Arabia, something even stranger happened. Gemany and USSR had the historical arrangment to divide up Poland, and before Poland was even defeated Germany declares war on USSR! This was in 1938 I believe, and the USSR fell less than a year later. But get this, then Germany cedes the Eastern Polish provinces to the soviet union! So for the rest of the game the soviet union existed only east of the Urals, except for what was taken by Japan... plus the few Polish provinces it should not have received, and had no way of reaching!

I have seen many strange things in this game, but I think this beats them all.

I have heard the same thing from other players. Soviet Union could have done much better than historically w/o purges. SHould have an option for that.

There is an option not to have purges, but each time it will raise your dissent by 10%

The starting position of the USSR is very weak.It has a very small starting army.It is true that in 1936 the Red Army was not powerful technicaly, but it enjoyed masses of conscripts. The starting number of inf div might be too small to survive an early blitz.

The USSR was woafully unprepaired for the german invasion, but quickly got its act together. While they had the Germans bottled up at Stalingrad, the Red army poured its ural and siberian troops into the battle, as they really didnt care what happend to them. During this, they were reequiping their main body of troops to come in and surround Von Paulus's army, and hence the infamous Kessel where the germans were compleatly surrounded by the Red Army.

There was a chance that Von Manstien's army could of broken though, but, he was forbidden to do that.

the AI really needs to defend its major cities better. It should really heavely defend Stalingrad, leningrad and the otherse, to prevent the bitter peice. i mean, even pskov was not totaly in the hands of the Germans.

I think the problem with ordering Soviet AI to defend those main cities especially is that they end up massing enormous amounts of troops in them... and nothing elsewhere.

In 1.03b I saw USSR strat. deploy most of their units around key cities. They had like 10 divisions in every province in german border in the beginning of the russo german war. Now the issue is if, and I believe they do, have 0 org because being strat deployed.

The russian units should be deployed a bit more in depth like 5 units in next two provinces from the border and in key places.

Not only they amass infantry in narrow pockets, but(like France)they tend to declare war prematurily...and get crashed.

I can say that balancing the AI Soviet-AI German war is not easy. In the beta we either have a complete Soviet victory by 1942 or so or a complete German victory around the same time. It is very dependent on many things:
1 Czechoslovakia - if the Czechs refuse and the Germans back down then Germany loses against the Soviets
2 Finland - If the Soviets annex Finland they do a lot better, if they get locked in a long battle they do horribly bad
3 German allies, if Germany has no allies it is screwed royally. If it has many it does well.

Historical strength on the Soviet side will result in a Soviet Victory every time.
