I recently got involved in the Iberian reconquista in my Sicily game. There was an independent count in Rosello that I had a claim on for some reason. I saw that he was named "de Marly" and, being the Bob Marley fan that I am, I decided to bring him into the fold and make him my vassal in Iberia. He conquered Navarre on his own and once I took over Burgos I gave it to Bob. He had a low intrigue score so he gave Navarre to his pregnant wife and kept Burgos and Rosello. His wife then gave birth to a Basque bastard (I really want to find a way to work that terminology into an everyday conversation somehow...just rolls of the tongue) despite showing the stork icon that I thought never indicated an illegitimate pregnancy.
The kid shows both parents on his character screen and both parents have him as their heir. What's going on here?

I forgot the really interesting part. The guy's wife of course declared independence from me shortly after being given land (I'm guessing because I have a 7 year old king, although he had built up quite a bit of prestige by the time countess of Navarra declared independece from declaring "he shall pay" after vassal after vassal declared independence (no realm duress(gratuitous parenthetical))). So, when young Ion de Marly inherits his parents, will he or won't he be my vassal since one is independent and the other is part of my kingdom?

If I'm not mistaken, there's an intrigue event that allows you to turn an otherwise legitimate heir into a bastard (I think the event is called "Your spymaster suggests your child may not have been sired by you" or the like). Perhaps one of those parents got the events and chose to make him a bastard around age 5?

Bastards that show two parents (who are married together) start out legitimate. Thus the stork icon. It's likely that some time after the kid was born, an intrigue event popped up "a legitimate son is revealed as a bastard!" ergo... the kids mum cheated on her hubby and got pregnant by another guy. Thus the kid shows two parents, has the step-dad's surname, and is a bastard. I think the default AI reactions to event are always the worst ones -> legitiimate son revealed as bastard/there is proof your son is not really yours - options a) What lies you tell! b) Why did you do this to me, Wife? ;_; (not actual selections, but close enough) the AI rulers will always choose obtion b).

The kid had the bastard icon at age 0. I'm pretty sure he had it as soon as he was born because I was checking his mother's character often to see if she'd have a Basque kid (because I'm weird like that and like having Basques in my game).

- You can make your bastard your legitimate heir - there's an event doing it, though it's not a systematic event with bastards. I had it with for Bohemond of Sicily/Apulia once.

- Did the kid have a bastard trait? Because if you gave Navarra to your vassals (or they just took it) and they relocated their capital there, there's always the 15% odds a baby will get the culture of his birthplace instead of his parents'.

- Some events (you see a beautiful girl, yummy) give instant bastards, but others, as said, can be decided by event - either you believe your spymaster or you don't. I'm not sure if the trait can be removed by event like "he wasn't a bastard after all" or if only the 1st mentioned about legitimizing bastard exists.

Maybe the spymaster event fired between his actual birth and the time you looked at the wife.

I'll answer this question, even though its now irrelevant to your game, because I think its interesting. I'm pretty sure it depends on who dies first. Here's how I think it would go:

If his loyal father dies first, then he'll inherit the duchie and become your vassal. Then, when his mom dies, he'll inherit her county as well and it will be added into his personal diocese, therefore a part of your realm.

If his disloyal (and now independent) mother dies first, he'll inherit her county as an independent count. Then, when his dad dies, he'll inherit the duchie as well, but he'll remain independent.

You will most likely have an event if you have a spymaster and a son who had different culture then your ruler. The spymaster will always ask if you believe the kid is yours.

de Marly is surely not basque (there are no basque characters in the beginning), but his son is, that caused the problem.

Actually this is quite frequent, I usually get the event in every generation.
