You may remember (though probably wont) that a couple of weeks ago I started a thread discussing my feelings on my latest Italy game; I had reached what I described as 'that' point. Essentially, it's what I described as the point where the game loses momentum and you lose all interest in the country that you have been playing as because you've been so successful. I ended up starting a new game as Oranje. I finished that game lately (I finished 7th which I was quite pleased with), and just out of curiosity and impulse I decided to reboot that Italy game.
And dear God am I having fun.
Yes there are only 10 years left in the game, and yes in a war I could trump anybody. But I had no idea that you could have so much fun pushing your country to the limits. When I abandoned it, I must admit that I was only 4th; I know that really I rule the roost though. Now I'm trying to finish at least third. This feat will require another 2000 points, although I'm hopeful about my chances. In the past 5 years I've got 1000 points, so it should only be about 10 years before I pull ahead of a stagnant U.S.A. Industrially I've pulled ahead of the UK (well, in income from exports at least), and am preparing for all out war to dismantle the Austrian empire.
What I'm trying to say in this rambley and somewhat fruitless exercise is that I was wrong. Dead wrong. The closing portion of the game has been one of the most interesting and exiting pushes for victory that I have EVER played; and this is after that push for victory from Oranje of all places...
