From TWCenter.

As many have noticed, the Westeros: Total War forum is no longer visible to those without Full Membership. On the 22nd of May, TWC site-owner, GrnEyedDvl received a letter from the lawyers and publisher of George R. R. Martin. Westeros: Total War must be removed from Total War Center in - as of then - ten days or the forum will face legal action. Needless to say, this is not an option and Total War Center will have to comply. Nevertheless, no one on the team plans to stand idly by and let several years of hard work disappear. We currently aim to send a reply to G.R.R.M. but until then we will have to migrate the bulk of this subforum, the submods, the hotseats even, to somewhere else. Yet the hardest part will be the community, the Total War fans whom we largely leave behind, the Westeros ones who will hopefully follow. We are currently considering possible venues and will continue to keep you updated, particularly through Twitter, and will update this thread with details as they become clear.

I certainly hope not.

Let me know if The Mountain that Writes has the audacity to send such a letter. In my real life I am an attorney, so let's see if he knows what Fair use is in the Copyright Act.

I came here to ask for the same exact question.

But I believe the grounds on which GRRM's lawyers have sent the Cease and Desist letter is that Total War Center was making Ad Revenue from views on the Westeros Total War mod. For all the times I have visited this forum I have not encountered an ad.

But I, as well as other fans of this mod would like to know if we should be worried as to whether this case applies to us as well.

This seems to be the way of it.

Thats a shame. Im really hoping nothing like this is going to happen to ck2 mod.

Anybody got the latest version of WTW to share? :eek:o

Hopefully we'll continue to go under the lawyer's radar, having this forum behind a password wall will probably help in that. Even if they do get in contact I'm sure the mod will just pop up elsewhere, probably by modders with different pseudonyms ;)

If i were GRRM this would be my favorite game so to shut it down would be a huge mistake as it makes people interested in asoiaf, and might buy the books or start following the series.

Copyright lawyers are notoriously trigger-happy.

How strange. It looks like you're right, but couldn't the exact same thing be said of the Game of Thrones Wikia, and any other website dedicated to the series? Groan.

Like Nviard55 said, this Cease and Desist might be to eliminate competition with a possible Grand Strategy game for GoT universe at works.

Official GoT based games are all as crappy as Star Trek based games no matter what form they take. No wonder they want to have any competition out of their way.

Just to clarify guys, the problem (as I am given to understand it) was that Total War Centre was making ad revenue off their dedicated Westeros subforum, which puts them in breach of copyright laws by technically making money off GRRM's property.
The Westeros Total War mod was not shut down and was not even contacted by the lawyers, the problem is not with them. Only the Total War Centre forum was contacted because only they were making money.

Niether this subforum nor our own Citadel forums make any ad revenue, so our mod should be safe under Fair Use. Also for what it's worth, Elio who is co-authoring the Worldbook with GRRM has been aware of (and a player of) our mod for well over a year now, so it is quite possible that we are already on GRRM's radar.
