Except for the existence of aliens / nonhumans: Pacific Rim, District 9 and Avatar. Avatar is probably the closest to the universe and Pacific Rim closest to the BattleMechs of BattleTech, other than Robot Jox.

Avatar the movie with Blue people?
Yea, the way they occupy / colonize other worlds is very BattleTech. Looks almost like super early days of BattleTech. Again, except for the fact of blue aliens instead of other humans being the locals. The AMP suits are like first attempts at Mechs. I just thought it was worth adding to the list as Robot Jox, Pacific Rim and District 9 are all just Earth.

Bits of Starship Troopers 3 reminded me of battletech. Though what they used were really closer to protomechs.

This music video has all the mechy bits

If you enjoyed that, youtubing things like "MechWarrior GMV" and "Front mission GMV" yield some pretty entertaining montages.

~ big and stompy before there was Big and Stompy. : )

Honestly, in terms of story and tone, I would suggest the anime Patlabor 2. It's not space opera - it's set in the "not too distant future" that is still very much our regular workaday world - but otherwise I think it feels most like Battletech of the various giant robot things I've seen over the years. It's a political thriller about police corruption in near-future Japan and it features murky loyalties, double-dealing, and shifting alliances that characterize Battletech to me. Also, the mechs look bulky and functional rather than sleek and lithe.

There was a movie we rented when I was a kid, but in the first few minutes the pilot was swearing so my mother flipped out and returned it. I don't remember what it was called and tried to find it last year, but was unable to. I'm pretty sure it was doing it's best to be Battletech without having rights and violating copyright. All I remember is a male pilot riding in a mech that reminded me of the Nova from MW2 and fighting in a desert area. He was talking to a woman over a headset, but I can't remember where she was suppose to be.

Netflix has a lot of great animes that feature mechs. Two of my favorite are Aldnoah.Zero and Kuro Makuro. It's more Zone of the Enders mechs than the giant, slow mechs of Battletech, but still really good for scratching your mech itch. I've watched AZ through a few times already and just love it, I will eventually buy the series on DVD when I get around to it.

Pretty sure that was robot jox.

No matter what people might think about the Matrix sequels (I personally do still like them, just not as much as 1), they did still produce one of the best scenes with Mechs in them, atleast in my mind.

When I saw this scene below, back in the day (sounds strange saying that about the early 2000's...XD ), my first thought was "YES! They have the technology now to truly make a BattleTech/MechWarrior movie!". I have always wanted movies and /or tv-series that takes place in the BattleTech universe, ever since I encountered the games in the 90's (same as I always wanted Marvel movies since the 90's, which I am getting right now, so yay! XD ). And since this scene below I have atleast known that it now was possible to make them in such a way that they do not look so... fake, as most Mechs in tv and movies have looked in the past befor the Matrix movies mechs. XD

Going to suggest Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. Now normally, a Gundam show isn't going to hit the same notes we are looking for here. However, this short, 8 episode series is brutal to its characters and both sides of the conflict are deeply flawed. I liked that there isn't episodes of filler as each set of 4 episodes is one arc. I just finished the first arc and will start the second soon. The combat is definitely still Gundam's fast and twitchy style, but the themes and context of the story fit right in to the kind of "No true heros" and "Nobody wins in war" marks BattleTech dwells on more than flashy robots piloted by ace teens.

The whole Patlabor franchise, really, even if a one-line summary of the franchise could be "Police Academy with mecha in it".
I mean, really. Mecha falling over and having pieces shot off of them. Field-expedient repairs the warranty doesn't cover. Commanding officer who's equal parts manipulative bastard and a troll. Beating enemy machine into submission with your mech's own severed arm (in the first episode, no less).
And yes, political intrigue too.

Ok, I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, but there was a syfy channel original movie that came out shortly after robot jox with some decent mech stuff in it. All i can really remember was that one of the mecha was a giant scorpion (with tail, NOT the 4 legged mech from the end fight of robot jox!) and it was actually a passenger conveyance not primarily a combat machine. It had a big passenger compartment on it's back, with room for like 50 people. It was travelling across a desert, and was attacked by bandits or something.

Edit: FOUND IT! It's called robot wars. So it's been 25 years since i watched it, i'm not surprised i got the plot wrong.
