I notice that these are associated with the planets that seem to have custom graphics.

I would like to try to make custom graphics for planets myself, but a search through the existing modding guides hasn't turned up how to do so, though I certainly could have missed something. :)

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
 
Its the custom graphics entity, you can probably mod those to make planets like you want. You can also make planets look like other planets. So if you want a planet to always 'look' like a dessert world but be which ever planet type your species likes.

I'm not at home right now to check to make sure I'm right, but if planet entities are anything like ship entities, then the entity defines are in the gfx folder.
