Simple question, really. What kind of alterations will you do, pesonally, to enjoy the game more?

I would strengthen the Italians a bit. Give them the oil that's in Libya, and bost their IPC's to maybe France's or Japan's level.

Possibly make Greece stronger as well. That would cripple turkey, but you can't have everything, I suppose.

I would do what you said. That being giving the italians some oil in Lybia but thats it. I might also better represent the fact that Eritrea and Somalia both have decent sized deposits of Oil and Coal. Somalia especially has a good bit of iron scattered throughout the country. Oh and the numerous gold mines of Ethiopia. That would really make east africa valuable real estate. Cya, bye!

Give Poland and Communist China a stockpile of ICBM's. :D

Like Charm said, it's hard to say at this point. If EU II is any indication, I won't be adverse to the idea of tweaking the files to my fancy to make things a bit more interesting on all sides. ;)

startdate can't be before 36 cept if someone makes a patch to do it

I know its supposed to Focus on WW2 only but id extend the time scope of the game some how, once you get to like 1944 when the war get s going good your going to start considering how to finish the war during the game and then take care of some personal housecleaning like taking out Japan and the Soviets before time runs out.

Thats wrong. I managed to start the game in january 1935.

that was not supposed to happen...then don't cry if germany annexes france in '38 :p

Should be by events :p

You did? That was indeed not meant to happen. How? Did you just type 1935 instead of 1936 in the files?

I'd start with some individual ships

The Naval aspects need to be a bit less generic. Three or for cookies do not fit all battleships. Take the Scharhorst which was a battlecruiser. With punch and armor a bit less than a battleship but with great speed probably around 32 knots. If I remember, its speed is greatly under rated in the game That was a great part of their survivability, being able to outrun almost all the British capital ships while outfighting the cruisers and destroyers. That was the German plan at least.

I'm new to the game and know it'll be great fun. Will it be possible to modify the characteristics of some ships? I only just got it. Thanks.

:)

You can entirely modify the stats of all units.
Get into your Hoi/DB/Units folder and you'll see that each producable unit type has a file with all the characteristics in it. Change at will...
If you change summink there, it will have an affect on all units ingame of that type and all units that will be produced of that type

However... In the OOB's for the countries, you can add these parameters as well...

For example... Sweden's cruisers were slightly slower than the standard but had higher firepower.

Code:
navalunit = {
 id = { type = xxxxx id = 1 }
 name = "Swedish Cruiser 1"
 location = XXX

  division = {
   id = { type = xxxxx id = 2 }
   name = "Swedish Cruiser 1"
   type = cruiser
   [B]maxspeed = 25[/B]
                 }
          }

The normal cruiser has a speed of 30, so normally the maxspeed line can be omitted. If you want to add specific characteristics for an individual ship, you can do so. You can use any parameter that is in the unit file for that unit

I reckon in the long term the best way to improve the game would be to create seperate scenarios/unit settings/events for a specific country which the human is playing i.e. For Germany say you might want to make the Allies far stronger than present and perhaps weaken Italy more so you are forced to give them a bit more assistance in africa, greece etc.

Yes Cossack, that is probably the best approach!
We must tweak Axis if we play the Allies or USSR, and the other way around if we play the Axis. Even then, from year to year we must tweak the save game file to "correct" some gross mistakes done by the AI.
Only if we play a minor we should not bother tweaking as the diference between majors and minors is already huge... unless you consider a "general tweak" covering all the majors to eventually corect some general ingame balances (this needs to be done only after testing extensively!).
