Instead of just editing things so I could play a minor as a major, I also exchanged Say, Poland for China, and Japan for Portugal. Would I see wildly expansionist Asian powers?

haha! maybe.... i was thinking of starting a grand campaign with china but i never thought of giving them the polish AI... i guess it could happen, i know how to do it (and so do you obviously henrique, or your cousin could show you i'm sure ;)) i am not sure how that would be....

Now, there are a couple of other things that would help. First, you should consider changing the religions of China and Japan. I suggest catholic for Japan and orthodox or sunni for China. Then they will be able to deal more with the other dudes, plus they will get colonists for some expansion. Imagine Japan expanding into Southeast Asia many centuries early, or China burrowing its way through that Eurasian pipeline, to kick Russia right in the donkey. Finally, to get any real fun in the first few hundred hours of the game, have some European seas or provinces explored by China/Japan, or even better, give them historical(?) explorers!

I agree, the one arguement with this game was how it handled Japan and China. I think all countries should be allowed to colonize if they choose. I know historically they didn't but that changes. Like historically england colonized america. But every game that is not the case I change what I do. Show should major powers like the Chinese and Japanese should also. Changing religions is solution. But the real one should be a patch that allows a start up option to have others countries have full tech tree, diplomacy, and colonists.

Japan and China do get colonists occasionally. In one AAR, Japan had a trading post in North America (on the Atlantic coast no less?!)

I will look into improving China and Japan in my randomization project but that will have to wait until I get a copy of the game and see what can be done.
