My oldest to date is Edwin Leofricson at 72y 7m 22d, bloke just kept on going, annoying really as i didn't get to choose wives for my grandsons, and will probably not directly get a chance to choose the wives for any of my heirs for quite a while unless accidents happen.

What exactly determines when a character will die? is there a ceiling or can character theoretically live forever? id assume they are given the health variable at birth (or game start) and this is modified over time and checks are made on this to determine death?

The longer they live the likelier they are to die, but there's no hard set "you will die at this age" limit. So theoretically a character could live for centuries.

Count yourself lucky, my last character died of old age at 50, I fear for the future of the realm with such pathetic genes at it's disposal.

To be fair, 40 has been considered old age in the middle ages. Few ever saw their 60th birthday...

In the game, I've had rulers die of old age at 42, while some countess (which I hoped would die soon so my ruler gets the count title back) not only outlived that ruler but also his son and grandson, before dying at age 80-something...

Well, remember the realm doesn't matter. It's all about your family ;).

I remember playing as the "De Vermandois" dynasty once, quickly took over France (got lucky with inherintances :p), anyway my first 3 rulers all lived into their 70's, and i managed to a couple of side branches out, but then it went downhill, they began dying in the mid 30's, and the side branches died out completely, eventually all there was left was a 5 year old kid and the descendants of a sainted bastard, very nerve wrecking. At the end the Bastard branch got the throne, as the 5 year old kid's only son died childless..
actually quite amusing :D

So you're saying that possibly in one game, there is a character that was over 100? That is fascinating. I wonder what the record is.

There was a character over in the French Subforum that hit 100...don't have the link but it was posted in a similar thread a couple months ago.
