I too enjoy a thinly-armored Centurion for my Medium Lance‘s Missile Boat.

That and a pair of Hunchback-4P‘s for a brace of jump-capable Laserboats, capable of some truly amazing Rear Torso damage.

Rounding out this Medium Lance is often either a Firestarter or Grasshopper, with max-Armor, Flamers/Machine Guns respectively and even more Medium Lasers. It isn’t until the Heavies/Assaults that I work in Autocannon and PPCs.

I really like a Phoenix Hawk, coming in at 45 tons, as it can be highly mobile and deliver a major alpha strike. The SLDF version is even better.
The PHX-1B is far better than any of the 50's.

My favorite 50 is the Enforcer with a lightweight gauss rifle and an ER LL or a PPC.

Anyone looking for a Multiplayer match?

@Curtis Cook, the Black Market. In a campaign where the Mech Parts is set to 3-parts to 1-Mech, a Royal Hawk is quite possible… though I have passed them up...

….because I prefer to spend my Cbills in other ways. That, plus I greatly prefer Centurions in the 50-ton range and Hatchetmen in the 45-ton range. : )

Ah, thank you. Until just now I've never had enough money to buy whole mechs on the black market, and (after paying blackmail three times to stay in) I'm now barred, I assume permanently.

I'm playing with 8 parts to make a mech, and then I have to equip them.

The 1B usually runs about 6M, so it's actually a bargain considering you can solo a high percentage of the missions in one.

Bouncin' and backstabbin'.

That would be around 66 million for me, and that would be if I had access to the black market. Currently I have over 120 million, but this is the first run I've been near that.

just had to add this past Easter’s picture to the above post, fresh from the British Copper Mine where Monty Python’s The Holy Grail was filmed : )

If you are talking about a game without mods, I'd probably choose either a Crab or the Hunchback 4P for brawlers (no ammo to go boom). And honestly I'd use a Trebuchet over the Centurion just due to hardpoints...both are going to be very fragile as missile boats.

If I'm playing with mods I prefer the TLS-1B Talos. And yes I am well aware that it is a horrible mech...but it is still my favorite medium, and somehow I manage to make it work out, even using it stock.

If you can manage to get the parts through the Blackmarket then a Starleague era Griffin 2N is IMO the best 50 tonner in the vanilla game.

I equip mine with 2 SRM6, 2 SRM4, usually a LL in the arm, max jump jets and max armour. and about 2t onf SRM ammo. Fast, Extremely Agile, can 1 shot just about anything short of an Assault if you get in it rear amour and with the DHS can get off about 3 alphas before heat becomes an issue. Lights and other mediums just melt.

Seriously if your starting a new game, just hack the config file and make it your Ancestral mech, you wont need anything else for a long time, just don't lose those DHS.

It IS a wonderful mech… but it's a 55 tonner, not a 50.

In my opinion all 55 ton mechs are superior to anything else of the same technology level up through 65 tons. Kintaros, Griffins, Shadow Hawks, Wolverines are all excellent mechs, and very easily upgradable with LosTech without losing the flavor of their base models. The least impressive are the Shadow Hawks and Wolverines, and even they have the advantage of amazing heat management.
