The new map teaser released today for All Under Heaven is incredible, even if it’s still WIP. It’s only natural to start brainstorming campaign ideas. This begs the question: which part of Asia will you play in first?

Here are a few of my plans, in no particular order:
  • A Viking adventurer who helps the Sons of Lodbrok avenge their murdered father before setting off on a quest to the mythical land of Cathay. Your descendants will go from foreign mercenaries to high ranking Chinese bureaucrats to eventually claiming the Mandate of Heaven and taking the Middle Kingdom to grand heights.
    • Alternatively, get sidetracked on the journey to the far east and establish a pirate empire between the straits of Malacca, founding a great city in the same place as modern day Singapore.

  • A Norman adventurer who helps Bill the Bastard conquer England and then fights his way through Asia as a hedge knight before finally arriving on the distant shores of Japan. Will you become history’s first weeb in the Land of the Rising Sun?

  • A “Filipino” sailor with a thirst for adventure who travels west and eventually becomes embroiled in the Struggle for Iberia. Comment below if you know why that would be so ironic.

My first thought on reading the DD was: viking adventure down to SE Asia and create a lineage of god-kings practicing a militarized form of Buddhism.

My favorite playstyle with the Asia Expansion Project mod was sending Hasteinn and Ragnarr's sons to the East and observing them. But Hasteinn just keeps conquering or adventuring into random duchy on the edge of his diplomatic radius, ruining my plans for him. I especially loved Indonesia and Philippines because of their unique geography - many small islands with vibrant green forests. Sigurdr was usually sent by me to India, Bjorn - to Urals, Middle East, Fergana Valley or Indochina, Ivar - to Tibet. I also often sent Halfdan to Africa.

One time, Sigurdr ruling Egypt conquered Yemen, made Yemen primary title and moved his capital from fertile Nile to desert.

I'm gonna be a basic bitch: Japan, establish myself as a feudal vasall, overthrow the Kampaku, create the Shogunate and become Shogun, go full knight effectiveness Samurai build.

Minmax run: landless Norse adventurer to conqueror -> Elevate Mann -> Solve Intermezzo -> Solve Iberian Struggle -> Become Saoshyant -> go nomad -> become Genghis Khan -> here I usually went on to restore Rome, but I'll go full Kublai Khan instead and establish a conqueror dynasty in China.

But depending on what nice permanent bonuses we can gain from Japan, Korea, SEA, I might do those first before I finally take up the Mandate of Heaven.

Like in those videos about conquering entire world in one lifetime where authors collected useful bonuses from everywhere?

Something like that, yes. But the important bit is not how many lifetimes it takes, but to get there asap, since some events have time limits. Makes it a nice challenge, and it feels rewarding to pull it off.

That's tough. I really want to play i the Shangdong region and maybe try and split off to form my own independent Kingdom/Empire. Although I also want to play as the Tang and help them regain their former glory, just because they're my favorite Chinese state.

Japan looks sick as hell too. It would be super cool to lead samurai invasions across Eurasia. Maybe a Japanese adventurer and try and form a Japanese kingdom in Europe and make Crusader Kings into a JRPG, haha.

I also really want to play in Dai Viet or Angkor since I'm interested in those regions' histories. Maybe try out Indonesia and form Singhasari, Majapahit, or Srivijaya.

Playing as the Chola and forming a great Empire across the sea would be pretty cool too.

Like, there's a lot I want to do when this update comes out.

Isn't it too early to make plans? We still don't know all the details of the new DLC, and it's unknown in what technical condition it will be released, not to mention that it's still several months away, it's quite possible that not all users of this forum will even live to see the DLC's release.

As of right now plan is to use the custom character of me I have saved and move him out east and do some landless stuff their, depending on what mood I’m in will decide on if I want to try and go for China or Japan.

irish landless adventurer trying to seemlessly blend my way in to one of the east asian regions. maybe get an estate in china and build up enough merit to have the emperor saying go white boy go

Definitely want to play in China first. Whether as Emperor or as a minor official rising up remains to be seen. I'd like to believe that Celestial gameplay will be fun enough to have a career of several generations as a civil official before aspiring to the Throne myself.

I think that I am gonna take a Mandala for a spin. Partially, because I like it – I have background in South Asian Studies, and SEA is the closest one to that.

Otherwise, I want to check how it performs. I always enjoyed fragmentation rather than big blobs, and I think Mandala may do that. I want to see if it fulfills promises – like e.g. if I wouldn’t be tempted to scatter my little domain as far away as possible so that getting my army anywhere would not take half a year, because I cannot raise it among the Tributaries – and if the sacred kingship material would be taken seriously rather than memey.

Then I may try a quick run of Japan. Mostly top tier, and mostly because Japan would be supposed to do less external war – and so I’d like to check if just ruling Japan without ever going into an (external) war would be fun. I am somewhat sceptical of it, and if it is not, then I may just go straight to China for next half a year, or so.
