When I conquer 2 provinces of the AI, after a while it often offers one of those 2 provinces in a peace-agreement. My question is which province the AI will offer in such a situation. The smallest ? The one the most far away ? Random ? The one that was first conquered ?
I noticed that when I ask for the other province the offer is always refused. Although both provinces are almost equal in size.

It is irritating. As Portugal, I want to have all African provinces. Austria has Tripolitania, Corfu and their 5 core-provinces. It is easy for me to conquer Tripolitania and Corfu, but the other 5 are impossible to get. They have all maximum-forts, big armies, are difficult to reach and even with the help of France, I cannot conquer one of them.
Whatever I try, Austria always offers Corfu to me . And when I ask Tripolitania, they always refuse.

The AI will usually offer the worst province it can. I'd take Corfu, build up for 5 years, and then fight again, but that may be a badboy issue.

I've found the best way to get the province you want is to conguer the capital as well, although this isn't always possible or practical. But if you can do it, it is well worth the extra effort. You will get the province(s) yuo want when yuo dictate the terms and you can demand some extra cash as well. :)

Capitals + saves

I'm all for the sacking of the capital. Sacking a capital usually results in some good "leverage".

1. wait for them to sue for peace. You might get 3 provinces.
2. if they don't sue for peace, you can get 2 provinces almost surely.
3. if their means to recuit armies or economy is threatened (you're occupying densely populated regions or CoTs or high value regions), you have stronger leverage by nature.
4. If you occupy 3 territories that are weak, you can usually get those three after waiting for a sue for peace, and this time because they ARE so weak and the opposing government has pressing matters.

Seriously, the AI was definitely developed with really straightforward goals... the problem is that common sense hasn't been incorporated, nor has it in just about every AI save for Cyc's stuff (cyc.com).

And save often. After you sack the capital, SAVE. Before you declare war, SAVE. I know this is a pansied approach, but sometimes you do stupid things that you KNOW no King would do. And then you can restart and demand those same territories and this time they'll give'em to you! I've found that there is an element of randomness to a nation aggreeing on many things... alliances, marriage, peace, etc. In the end, it's just a game. :)

In a game as Austria, I took control of Kosovo, Bosnia, and Bulgaria in a war with Turkey. Turkey offered me Bosnia, but I refused because that would have ended up with me surrounding Turkey's province of Kosovo. Thus, I offered to take Kosovo. The AI refused, and then promptly offered me Kosovo and Bosnia. I, of course, accepted.

The AI does indeed work in mysterious ways ;)
