While We Still Stand

Part 1: 1066-1070

Well, because I have so much spare time I thought I would make an AAR of a game I have been playing as Nubia, a super fun country with endless possibilities. My goal: Survive for as long as I can!

Now, it is quite possible that you either do not know where Nubia is or do not care, so here is a map:

Nubia4.jpg

Yep, it's those provinces just below the Fatimid empire. Now, a quick examination shows we have two provinces, Nubia and Sudan. They are both dirt poor. Still, maybe there are opportunities for expansion? Uh, no. We have around 500 troops, and the Fatimids have about 15000. OK, so were outnumbered 30 to 1. Oh crap.

Nubia2.jpg

Here is the King, Haroun. He is married to an 18 year old called Safiya.

February 8th 1067: I rather optimistically offer an alliance to Byzantium. They refuse. I also try to ally with the Fatimids but to no avail.

March 28th 1067: Haroun and Safiya expecting a child. Well, this is promising. If I can survive long enough maybe I can get a good marriage and inherit something?

February 23rd 1068:

Nubia5.jpg

Oh lordy.

June 5th 1068: Haroun and Safiya expecting a child. Well, here goes nothing.

August 1st 1068: We finally scrape together enough dough for a forestry in Sudan, which when built will increase our income by about 0.11 gold per month. Well whoop-de-doo.

November 1st 1068:

Nubia6.jpg

It's better than nothing. The only problem is that last time I checked Georgia was getting battered by the Alans and Cuman. Crap.

March 11th 1069: Haroun and Safiya have a son, Abdul-Malik. He's all right, I suppose.

Nubia8.jpg

June 16th 1069: Haroun and Safiya expecting. Still no Fatimid invasion.

July 19th 1069: We get musical instuments in Nubia. Well, isn't that nice? That will certainly help us against the Fatimid hordes.

August 1st 1069: Forestry completed in Sudan. Now the province screen isn't quite as blank, which is nice.

March 18th 1070: Haroun and Safiya have a son, Jahan, stats 5/7/7/9. He becomes the new heir. That's if he ever gets the chance to inherit.

July 8th 1070: Haroun and Safiya expecting a child.

That ends this update. Expect around one more (two if I'm lucky). This means I have two AARs on the go at the same time, which just shows what a forum whore I am.

While We Still Stand

Part 2: 1070-1071

August 5th 1070:

Nubia9.jpg

OK, no need to panic, 30 to 1, that's nothing, right? I march my pitifully small army to engage Fatimid troops at Aswan.

August 28th 1070:

Nubia10.jpg

Well, surprise surprise I won a battle. However, we outnumbered them two to one.

September 13th 1070: Right, here comes the big Fat Fatimid army, around 2000 men. The siege of Aswan is going nowhere fast so I march back to Nubia.

September 21st 1070: Fatimids begin siege in Nubia province.

September 23rd 1070: Fatimids begin siege of Sudan.

Nubia11.jpg

Well, it's not surprising really. There are currently 1096 men besieging Nubia and 703 at Sudan. Oh dear.

Nubia12.jpg

September 27th 1070: We engage troops at Nubia. This is the result:

Nubia13.jpg

In case you're wondering, yep, that's our entire army that's just been wiped out.

March 9th 1071: We discover the Seven Liberal Arts in Sudan. Very helpful.

April 6th 1071: Haroun and Safiya have a daughter, Amsha with stats 4/8/7/9. That'll be useful.

April 18th 1071: Fatimids take Nubia.

May 14th 1071: Fatimids take Sudan.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed this AAR, I know I haven't. Goodbye, and better luck if you give Nubia a try.

*sniff* And a mighty nation is written in the pages of history...sometimes. This nation on the other hand...

Nice AAR any way though ;) I never realized Nubia was a playable nation.

Semi-Lobster: Hmm, I'll have to look into that, although I kind of like the insane difficulty of Nubia as it is. Is the bugfix the one that sorts out cultural conversion for beta? Because I've been meaning to get it for that.

Mike von Bek: I'm guessing that even with the bugfix Nubia is still surrounded by the Fatimids, so I'm not sure how much further I could get. Anyway, thanks for commenting :D

Farquharson: And it was going so well until the second update :( There may be a second Nubia AAR with bugfix if I can be bothered.

Henry V. Keiper: Thanks! Although to say Nubia is playable may be a bit of an overstatement. Let's just say it's selectable ;)

Too bad, but I did not expect this AAR to get very far. I hear Nubia is a country to play just to see if you can actually get anywhere. Where is Peter Ebbeson when you need him to show how to conquer the CK world with little tiny Nubia? (Check out his Tibet AAR in EUII to see what I mean.)

Ah yes, I remember reading his "World Conquest For Dummies" a while back, though that was Trebizond. Though to be honest, I think even he would struggle with Nubia in the patch I played (ie without bugfix). Another thing, where can I download it? I looked around the beta forum to no avail.

Poor Nubia. Well I guess that's what they get for being surronded by Fatimids.

Good story anyway.

That'll happen when a nation is usually covered up by the game log

If you get the bugfix, you should make an AAR of that game too--just to see if you can make it past 1071 :D

And for being in a game where Africa ends a few miles from the Mediterranean ;)

Nubia will be back! However, I've installed the most recent beta and Nubia looks no easier. Expect a sequel to this very AAR in the coming weeks or months (or years), in which I'll try to survive beyond 1071.

That is going to be a challenge.

I give you a few days.
