I have begun a series of modifications that would produce an entirely new, comprehensive mod that I think would:

1) Create some more historical validity
2) Make the US more challenging in the early game while introducing historical atmosphere. IOW, the late 30s was not a tranquil time of humming industries and burgeoning techs just waiting to be unleashed on the Axis. It was a time of fear and anxiety with labor unrest, racial unrest, economic dislocation, political turmoil, and a population that was overwhelmingly resistant to entering the war until the invasion of Poland, and strongly resistant right up to Pearl Harbor. I've modeled that atmosphere
3) Deal with the strength of submarines and the uselessness of carriers
4) Make tech advancement far more realistic, with advanced tanks, jets and nukes not appearing at completely ahistorical early dates. Basically, nukes would not be possible before late 44, jets before late 43, and things like Panther and Tiger II tanks would be possible at the earliest about one year before they actually showed up on the battlefield. The semi-modern combat techs would not be possible before 1945. With this mod, tech sharing would be a reasonable feature of a MP game
5) Keep airpower as a factor in the game without the use of actual air units (dealing with tac bombing bug), and keep a reason to research air techs

The mod will be based on bolt's 1.2c and go from there. Basically, I have changed event files, modded include files to remove air units, modified unit files to change values, and modified tech files. As a result, you will probably want a separate install for this mod. If you want to play this mod, let me know. I've done most of the components, but would need to add a few in, polish everything, and put it into a package. If there is interest, I could have that done by the end of the week.

The mod will really only be appropriate for multi-player games, which is why I've posted here.

1) Ok, but then again the real WW2 was full of freaky events. France fell in record time, communistic china survived, Japan didn't fight the Soviets...
2) Agreed.
3) Excellent.
4) I was under the impression that the ME-252 (or was it 262? Whatever) had test flights in 1941, and the jet engine was first built in the 20's. And the German nuclear program was very advaced before the war (but miscalculations showed that there simply wasn't enough Uranium in the world to make an atomic explosion). Also, why should Tigers and Panthers be possible that late. Teoretically they could have been made earlier, if there was a truly major need for them.
5) I'd like to keep the air units, but you give them orders to follow (Like defend for fighters, tactical bombardment...), to make them easy to handle in non-stop multi front MP games.

Thanks for the feedback

1) That's kind of what I'm thinking about. I'm also talking more about the historical way units were used, such as you did not make big fleets of submarines and go sink all the other navies and control the oceans. You do in this game.

4) About the jets, ok, but for certain reasons that created difficulties, they WEREN'T available until very late. The game allows you to simply wave away those difficulties. In the game, there are no unforeseen prototype problems or miscalculations. Yes, the Panther could have been designed and built in 1940 theoretically, but nobody knew they would NEED it until they had some war experience. I'm also trying to improve the aspect of replaying World War II. A lot of guys want to replay WWII and see if they can make it come out differently, and jets zipping around over a battlefield of super-heavy tanks while nuke-tipped ICBMs fly across the oceans in 1942 is not WWII. By allowing the techs to appear about a year before they did, I think I allow players the flexibility to do better than history without divorcing the game from historical reality altogether.

5) I would like to do that also, but this is just as a workaround for the MP tac bombing bug. This way, when you get rid of the air units to prevent the bug, you can still have air power as a factor in the game. There would be no purpose to keeping this part of it after 1.03, whereas I think a lot of the other parts of the mod would still be valid.

That's just it: they didn't need them till they came out (or, at least as they perceived the "need"). We can see (w/ 20/20 hindsight) that the heavy tanks would have ruled the battlefield. It'slike with planes why should the USA build monoplanes when bi-planes work so well? Or, as the Brits had to tell their pilots: stop trying to dogfight the Italian bi-planes! You come up behind them, they just do a loop and shoot you down!
