Hi,
played this game few years ago and now came back for a few games and I don't remember what to do with marriage.
how should I marry in order to get titles? should I marry my daughters to counts without heirs? old daughters so they won't have childs?
well, any suggestions on the issue would be appreciated.
cheers,
Amir

You need to marry your sons (preferably your Heir) to the daughter (Ideally oldest/only daughter and he has no sons) of a Ruler who has the correct inheritance law that passes down through daughters, so her sons inherit. Her sons will be your grandsons, and your Dynasty. This game is all about your Dynasty. The children of your married daughter will be someone else's Dynasty (Unless she's married to your Dynasty male).

2. I actually have something like this. My grandson inherited England, but because he was the son of my second son, he won't get my titles. (I'm France, btw). So what I guess you have is something like the Habsburgs: one dynasty, two thrones.

You can still get an inheritance through one of your daughters. Her children wouln't be part of your dynasty, though. Its harder, and you might have to pull a few assassinations, because that succession list is all that's going to put you in the throne. There's no waiting 60 years and inheriting a 4th cousin.

Of course, if a dynasty gets totally whipped out, the inheritance goes to the next of kin. They're usually the closest surviving relative through marriage.

For example, my d'Anjou dynasty got whipped out and inherited by a Danish Prince: whose mother was from Shetland and her mother was a Scott who was the daughter of my great, great, grand father's brother. (Oh, the joys of trying to explain distant dynastic links.)

  This is just ridiculous. Makes me feel good about democracy.

thanks.
1. what happens when someone dies heirless?
2. what happens if my grandson inherits a realm but he is not the grandson that inherits me (via my son)?

1. Depends on the succession laws. You can see in the succession list on the character screen who is in line for the throne. If the list is empty, then a "country cousin" (mediocre randomly generated male of same dynasty) takes over and your game continues.

2. Nothing ... then your future ruler's brother has his own realm. If you want your greedy hands on his title, then you might be able to change succession laws so the second grandson would inherit your realm.

With semisalic laws, you might indeed inherit from outside your dynasty (your 3rd cousin from your mother's side, or someone even more distant kicks the bucket and you're the closest relative).

I tend to marry daughters to a) courtier dynasties I like to keep, b) distant dynasty members (minimum of second cousins) to keep the blood close a bit, and bring the distant branches' inheritances closer to my main family occasionally, and c) To various rulers and their heirs. In no particular order of importance... well a and b do get preference, as they require someone of marriageable age as the target (= will produce kids).

c is not so much for the inheritance, but because I like the idea of having distant relatives on other thrones, even if the game doesn't recognize it because their not my dynasty.
