I've read online reviews, seen kings AAR and some other guy who was thinking of using the Nanbu too and dozens of repots scattered across the forum. Are they really famous in the histories or something? What is with everyones apparent obsession with them?

They start in the northern corner with lots of smaller and some equal strength clans around. No big bads near. They also start with all their five kories in their own demesne which helps the early game a lot.

I chose them because I like having a secure border when getting used to the game, so I don't have to worry about people invading from the north. Then the idea is to sweep like a tide across the whole of Japan ...

Be careful. Their isolated position is good until they meet with Uesugi. If they decide that you are becoming too powerful, then they will simply destroy you.

This game is hard and very unforgiving. At last, a PI title that is truly challenging and in which "world" conquest actually makes sense! :D

Why not the Shimazu? They seem to have a similarly good position.
+1

I have won my only game with them so far. Your neighbors are more dangerous, but so are you. Just need to plan for how to grow and fight the Ouchi... My Nanbu games have all ended in failure, but I will win a game with them I swear it. Will have to start spamming Uesegi with honor ninjas early this time...

Playing a good Shim game right now. I have most of Kyushu and the Ouchi are under heavy attack from the massive Yamana! I figure now is a good time to attack. Not sure if I can beat the Yamana, but I need to get the Ouchi out of Kyushu before the Yamana get a foothold.

This is good to hear. Some of the impressions I've gotten have been that the game is simplistic, compared to PI's other games. I hate when a game like this pops up from under my radar. Before yesterday, I knew nothing about the game, and with Steam's current discount... Decisions, decisions.

They have revolver stakes.

Clearly.
Fair, but I prefer the Oxtongue, myself.

I actually started with the Mogami for much the same reason. Secure the north, then move south. I think I've moved a bit too slowly, but it's going to be interesting to take on a power almost five times my size (11% for me, 49% for them).

That goes for most any clan, really. Sooner, rather than later, you'll run straight into a huge blob that you'll have to deal with. With any clan.

I certainly enjoy the unusual situation in this game, and it's good to see the AI is not only steady but using tools at their disposal such as plots. It bodes well for the future.

I'm sad that the game length seems to be fairly short, though. I enjoy my own steady pace, some RP-style play, and investigating all progressive situations along the way (including in many AI-run locales). The time limits on the game tend to make it feel more "twitchy" and rushed for me, which isn't a positive. Everything else is a good base to start with, though.

In some ways it's true, there's no underlying system like the population management of Victoria, nor choices of National Ideas and such where choosing right is important.

However it's the combat aspect of the game that is more challenging than the others. The combat is one step below HoI3 and one step above EU3 in the sense of difficulty, it is however much more unforgiving than both when it comes to individual moves. You make the wrong choice, lose your entire army, the game is lost. At least unless you play a blob.

I won the second game I played as Nanbu. They start in a nice position to quickly absorb smaller nearby clans. I basically absorbed the whole northern area while playing nice with the two larger clans which remained to my south (One of the three got eaten by the other two). When these two decided to fight it out, I declared war on one of them and devoured most of the clan.

I had about 5-7% of Japan about this time and Uesugi was tied for 1st with 13-16%. I was invited to a plot to attack Uesegi by my southern neighbor, although I was pretty skeptical about our prospects for success should the plot trigger. The plot did trigger, incidentally, with nearly all of Uesugi's neighbors suddenly at war with them. I got lucky in that the Uesugi decided it would direct 99% of its armies to my southern neighbors while I took kori after kori away from the Uesugi. I decided to white peace with them for a while so both sides would weaken eachother further while I focused on other things, but rejoined soon after when I was invited to a plot to attack the Uesugi again. After I had absorbed the Uesugi the game was essentially won for me, the rest just involved mopping up. I was a bit surprised by the lack of plots against me the entire game. I suspect that my leader's insanely high intrigue stat had something to do with it, but I'm unsure. I had some real lucky breaks in this game, and I am sure that there can be much variation between each game.

Some funny things that I noticed in my game were the following:
1. Yamana was completely absent by the time I was looking at that section of Japan. I have no idea when they disappeared or even what happened to them. In place of a super Yamana/Ouchi there was a fairly large Kitabatake clan which had basically devoured both. Other large notables were Toki and Takeda
2. Ashikaga clan broke free from Uesugi during the massive war and managed to secure half a dozen kori that were quite spread out.
3. Takeda spontaneous split into two around the time I finished with Uesugi. They were fairly decent in size pre-split and made their conquest much easier.
4. Kitabatake clan, which was 2nd largest at like 11-15%, decided it would become subjugated by my clan without a single combat occuring. (I guess this is something that will be addressed in future patches)

All in all it was an enjoyable game. I still have a lot to learn though, especially regarding the best use of ninjas and the sow discontent mission.

I think the best "sow decent" use is actually to get rid of your own annoying Daimyos or subjugated Leaders in case they create trouble for you, like not voting your sons as heirs. Sowing decent to their vassals (try to transfer to them the worst!) is the perfect way to have some internal turmoil where you can appear to save the day while eliminating the threat! ;)
