Why can't I land on Crete?

I've tried this many many times... I'm at war with Venice, and I've occupied all their mainland holdings. I want to go for an annexation, so I build a fleet, fight them and win, and when I'm about to land a siege force on the island, I just get a red X. The army doesn't budge from their ships, they just stand there stupidly. Why? I'm pulling my hair out in frustration. I've gone to the trouble of occupying every province they have on the mainland, and I can't attack one of the island cities. Can anyone help me?

Sounds to me as if your army isn't big enough to enter the province...

How big does it have to be? I'm worried that if I need in excess of 30k troops, I'll time out on the war....

Bigger than the amount of men in the fort, I suppose.

Well, as it turned out I got a pretty sweet deal. I didn't annex Venice (and thus saved my badboy rating a bit), but I did get Illyria, Istria and Ragusa, and my colonial empire is kinda jumpstarting. I have the American seaboard explored, have 4 colonies (Quebec, Savannah, Tanserrat, Dakar) as well as a single colonial city (Carolina). With the 1 colonist a year coming in from the shipyard, everything's going smoothly. Oh and I vassalized Savoy.
