Early on in the game a large fleet of galleys can wreck havoc among the much more expensive warships, because they are better in the shock (chok?) phase.

They are a nice way to control restricted waters like the Mediterranean and the Baltic.

Not really to the point, but I had great fun the other night when, in support of a campaign against Turkish Indian Ocean colonial holdings, Admiral Howe sailed the Home fleet of some 80 warships into the Med. He met an equally large Turk fleet of galleys. You can imagine the result. As Lee said, 'It is well war is so terrible - we should grow to love it too much.'

Notice that the AI will move galleys out of the Med.

This actually hurts England early, since France can get a bunch of galleys up to the channnel fairly quick, plus usually Papal and Savoyard fleets too. I think this is often the margin of victory.

Well, as long as they have that attrition then why shouldn't they be able to risk their galleys ?

Actually there were regular connections from Flanders to the Italian merchant states, most notably Genoa, early on, along the coasts.

And they don't die instantly. I once accidentaly sent my fleet with 14 gallyes to Table and when they finally got back, there was still 3 left.
They take attricion like normal ships would during storm. They sink eventually, but not at the moment the pass the Gibraltar.

And they are good early in the game: much cheaper and useful in Mediterrain.

Don't be afraid to send a large fleet of galleys to the Channer for instance, just don't keep it there for too long. And remember, you lose more of them then warships.

Actually, the _English_ navy had quite a few galleys in it during the early 16th century.

This probably explains why they do so badly at sea against the French until Elizabeth and Drake show up...

The Spanish sent 4 galleys in the Armada, but they all had to abandon the mission befoore they got to the channel - the rough seas were breaking their seams.

I once had 35 venecian galleys under Lominelli sit in the channel off dover for 5 years without suffering attrittion. my entire fleet 60+ ships were trying to move my 50k army in kent over but were beaten back every time due to blocade bonus and 4.4.4.0 (iirc) lominelli against a 3.2.3.0 english admiral (iirc).

galley use and fleet shock ???

I use galleys to picket sea zones along my coasts and keep an eye on any traffic, espcially in the English Channel and the Ottomans in the Med. As a side query, does having troops on the ships increase shock value, or are the marines inherint in the ship unit?
Thx, a very helpful forum
