Would love to know if that feature is ever possible to be made for "pew pew players" like me :) If nothing is set in stone yet - all is just being talked about - it would be very cool to know devs are at least seeing this a possibility in future.

Anyone else misses this greatly? :)

I was actually thinking about this last night. I'll write a full suggestion post about it, but I had an idea for a scenario where instead of starting at the top few layers of the map you start somewhere in the middle and have to fight your way both up and down. You need to go to the surface to find things like Stone and Fertile Land, and you need to dig down to find the rarer resources. I also would love to see the Surface used for more, like the ability to have buildings on the surface you can attempt to capture from enemies.

That sounds like ti would pretty much be a whole another game. Think the devs will mostly stick to improving their base formula atm, and not really going into redefining the whole gameplay system/mechanics.

I agree. I think a better idea is actually what the OP questioned about, overland invasions into the underground.

My own personal idea on it was that if they add in the dynamic lighting then any tunnel or area that has been dug out of the map that is not properly lit would have a small chance of spawning an enemy or two (or however many) that would then make their way towards where ever your prince is. What ever they do (if they do anything at all on this type of request) as long as it's an option that has to be turned on by the player then I'm fine with it. I'd probably play with it, but the majority of the time I'd prefer a non invasion game play.

No need to add much to this thread other than my “vote” on the subject:

Full scale attacks from above (and / or) below. Need a time limit before it starts though (maybe) – Yes!
Start of game in the middle or random start or start on the surface with nothing but the spawning pool – Yes!
Monsters spawning triggered by not properly lit areas or some other means – Yes!

. . . . as long as – they are all options for players to choice to turn on or off.

I would certainly play with all of these.

Oh, hey if you guys want a more survival focused Game of Dwarves, you should check out Towns. It's still in alpha and is kinda rough around the edges, but if you can overcome that, it's a great game. You build a "Town"/Base, or whatever.
your town can be underground or topside, you need to accommodate your pop with food and shelter, make taverns where heroes can move in, make workshops to produce iron tools and weaponry for your soldiers, make farms for a steady supply of wheat or farm animals, like chicken or cows. Bakeries to bake better food. Mines. Hospitals/clinics, whatever, you get the point. And doing all this in a hostile environment, every so often a "Siege" will happen, with monsters besieging your town walls(if you have any) and attacking citizens.

That's far from it though, it has a lot of depth and interesting gameplay. Check it out on Desura here. Thought it might fit some of you people's needs in terms of survival mechanics.

Played it -its okay, im not so fond of concept of heroes and I dont really like that game presentation. Game of Dwarves just appeals much more to me on every layer. I fell in love with low poly models of dwarves :D It just needs a bit more of unpredicatbility to make me play it for months :)

I think we need a reason to visit the surface first. Like the guy above mentioned if there was fertile land up there. Then going up there an making a little fort would be worth doing. And you could occasionally have attacks by goblin raiders an stuff it would be neat.

I did that. Sort of. On the map where you're supposed to shut the blast doors there's a teleport blocker with some orcs in it. And a tunnel from the surface to their lair and the gizmo of purple jagginess. So went to the surface and clobbered the wolves. One soldier had a bash at the fence surrounding the orc lair, but had to retreat.

So I decided to dig a trench. Fence section promptly dropped in it. Not a problem! Dug down, let fence drop, stuck block over the top and ladder into Orc Bunker 1. Soldiers stubbornly refused to engage, possibly due to spending too much time with the beer tree. After some more drink.. I mean training, they did eventually bash down the fence, orcs, and teleport jammer. Figuring this must be the path to riches, I set up a FOB in the former Orcbunker and started digging. But the results were... unexpected :)

Next time, I may pay more attention to the 'Dig this way you dozy dwarf!' signs.

This doesnt sound like a whole nother game, just another game mode, it would take some work, but is easy to be seen as a future patch, or expansion, as a more dungeon defender style game mode where you can rake up kills vs. evil creatures

I would gladly pay money for a "Surface Raid" DLC, together with new traps and above-ground fortification options... ;)

Just make it optional, or that you can trigger the invasions by yourself if you so desire. :)

I can easily imagine the poor humans in their peaceful village - then suddenly the earth creaks and breaks and their town square is gone revealing a precious gold vein... being picked at greedily by dorfs.

...and that is how the great conflict began. :p

Lol! Would make a great trailer for an expansion!
